Tonight on @subcultureonprp, we’re digging into the sound of college radio — R.E.M., Pixies, The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Throwing Muses, The dB’s, Dinosaur Jr., Camper Van Beethoven and more.

And yes, some of these songs are pretty well known now. But a lot of them are well known because college and community radio gave them a place to be heard before commercial radio caught up.

That feels especially fitting for us at PRP, where supporting independent artists and playing music outside the usual commercial lanes is a huge part of what we do.

I won’t be live tonight — I’m heading to Music Trivia at @therecordpub , where PRP is helping power their new Wednesday trivia night — but I’ve got a full hour ready to go.

Subculture airs tonight from 7–8 PM on 99.1 FM and PRP.fm. ❤️

#subcultureonprp #communityradio #collegerock #80s #90s

Long overdue but I wanted to post about my capstone project that I spent my last two terms at the UO on. This is QUEUE, a record shelf designed to keep record collecting fun and engaging with a variety of storage sections, a unique display of the records, and a playlist queue that encourages curation. Thank you to the Record Pub for letting me take photos there and Zoey for being a fantastic model. Also thank you to everyone else who helped out and cheered me on. This project was a labor of love and so grateful that this was the project I graduated with and I can’t wait to see what I get to do next.

For our next Staff Pick Showcase, we’ll take a look at what Derek’s been listening to. Here’s what he had to say about Sonic Youth’s “Dirty”:

“This is a band I’d heard before, but only truly got into after starting at TRP. ‘Dirty’ is my next pick because being one of their more palatable albums, it’s a great entry point into the catalog of one of the coolest bands to ever do it. If you’re new to Sonic Youth but shy away from the experimental, artier stuff, this will be a great way to get initiated.“

What do you think, Sonic Youth heads? Which of their records would you recommend for a new fan’s first listen?

I could easily lose an entire afternoon here. 🍺🎶

The Record Pub in Westmoreland is part record store, part neighborhood pub, and exactly the kind of wonderfully specific Portland place I love finding.

Grab a beer, snag one of their rotating $1 hot dogs, flip through the vinyl, listen to music and hang with friends until you inevitably leave with a record you definitely needed.

Save this one for when the rain comes back. You’ll be very pleased with yourself.

Just another reason I love exploring the little places that make Portland neighborhoods so fun to actually live in.

Send this to your beer + vinyl buddy and follow @pdxsally for more Portland gems, homes + life around the neighborhood. 💛
