Black art doesn’t require your expertise. It needs your presence✨

One of the earliest lessons my mother taught me was that I was meant to exist in any space I occupied. I carry that with me when I invite people into art spaces. It’s an invitation to be curious, to be vulnerable and to understand the importance of viewing, preserving and participating in Black culture.

So it was an honor to share my perspective with @artworth , last weekend. A space where all are welcome and the price of entry is only that you come curious and open to connection.

We have a responsibility to support the people documenting what it means to be Black past, present and future. I take that responsibility seriously.

You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to show up.
Literally. That’s it.

Stay tapped in to @artworth

And I encourage you to connect with these artists in whatever way feels right

@artworth put together an incredible night for art, artist, and art lovers where I was able to share not only my work, but the thinking behind it.

Thanks to @lenawaithe @julianjosephkyle @lindseyneeld for including and supporting me, to @dr.lewanzaharris for providing a beautiful space for us to be - literally, and figuratively. Thank you Lena, (taller) Julian and @itaddy for the convo.

To everyone who joined us for Artworth’s Homeplace thank you for showing up, for leaning in, and for making the evening so meaningful. The conversations were honest, inspirational, and exactly what Homeplace was meant to be. I’m so grateful for this community

My deepest thanks to @dr.lewanzaharris for opening her beautiful home in Harlem to us and for being such a gracious and wonderful host. You gave us more than a space — you gave us warmth.

To @lenawaithe thank you for your endless support. Your belief in this vision means everything.

To @lindseyneeld thank you for your tireless efforts behind the scenes. This night would not have happened without you.

To @slanginc and @itaddy thank you for contributing your masterworks and for sharing so generously in our talk. Your art and your words anchored the evening.

To @shakira.polite and @thereeljanedoe your insights and opinions were vital for the conversation we wanted to have in our space.

To @thahiddenhand thank you for providing the perfect soundtrack to the night. You set the tone beautifully.

And to @sirshanephoto thank you for capturing all the beautiful moments so we can hold onto them.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all who attended. Let’s continue the conversation.
