October 9 journal prompt: what's something you used to care enormously about that doesn't matter to you now?

I used to worry what others thought of my parenting. I remember admiring a mother of a large family whose children were always so well behaved. Whenever I was around her I felt like I was performing, and that she was judging all of my interactions with my children. She probably wasn't judging me at all! But for years what others thought of my mothering was probably an idol for me.

I don't know when it changed. Certainly not overnight. But some important realizations came to me: 1) I have incredible children. Not perfect children, but incredible. I'm so proud of them. I enjoy being around them. They are truly wonderful people. Who cares what someone else thinks of them? I know they are amazing. They truly delight me. 2) We are all doing the best we can. Whoever is busy doing the work of mothering, doesn't (or shouldn't) have time to judge me. Believe the best about others and keep your eyes on your own work. Or, as the Bible says, "Mind your own business and work with your hands." 3) The Lord and my husband are the two that I have to answer to. No one else. Those three realizations have been terribly freeing! Delighting in my family is so much more fun than trying to manage other people's opinions. 😊
