Research Studio 2026-2027 This year our assignment is an interpretive center for the Black Hills National Park. We plan to create a cultural node focused on the regional natives and the visitors of Mount Rushmore. Week one and two established a set of sketches that allowed us to explore designs before we arrived at the site. Interpretive Center - Presence Sketches These sketches are meant to develop concepts before we have visualized the site. The tab on the left is our week one assignment of 12 sketches that represent our baseline research of the Black Hills region. The tab on the right is our week two assignment of an additional 12 sketches with a partner (Ashton Remily). We further developed our concepts as pairs, bringing insights that we wouldn’t have discovered alone. Mount Rushmore Trip: Our trip to the Black Hills provided us with a glimpse of what the local culture and architecture is like. We experienced friendly interactions and plenty of people who were curious about our goals as a class. We were assigned a minimum of two sketches throughout the trip. I wanted to show the types of materials and how they were used within the area. As well as the hard lighting casted on the monument. Stave Kirke: This chapel is made entirely out of wood with large amounts of wooden ornamentation. Historically this structure was originally built in 1150 in Norway; however, this chapel was replicated in 1969 by the Lutheran Vespers to bring in more visitors to the Black Hills. Stave Kirke: This is the view from the parking lot showing how it is located on the hill. It also shows more of the ornamentation on the entrance. Stave Kirke: This is the view of the clerestory windows letting in a warm glow reflected from the wooden panels. Crazy Horse Monument: I positioned this photo to capture the juxtaposition between the finished sculpture and the status of the monument. Washington’s Side Profile View: This is the photo our site is based upon. Mount Rushmore Auditorium: I wanted to take this photo to show the materials the monument uses which I found eventually use within my project. Mount Rushmore Sculpture Studio: This photo was taken to show the woode

It was a great season for the fellas. Didn’t end the way we envisioned but it was a fun first season. 20-4 regular season champs and a 3rd place 🥉 finish in the tournament. The saxophones were just too loud. We will be back next year to bring daddy home some hardware.
