Frames from Passport 🗺️ A film I shot with @glenn_kitson for @stoneisland Glenn let me run round the world with him this summer shooting 7 cities on mini dv. Many tapes later we have the film passport. So much of my childhood was watching skate films shot on similar kit. Special love to @omarserge1 for coming with me to New York and shooting the London sides with us. It’s a Northern Thing: How Berghaus Went From The Peaks to the Streets There’s something inherently nostalgic about Berghaus, in the UK at least. Whether it’s its link to the ‘90s rave scene, Brit Pop co-signs, or its affiliation with the football terraces (or literally its penchant for making great outerwear), it’s a label pouring with memories. While Liam Gallagher helped put on Meru GORE-TEX and Jamiroquai the Extrem 7000, it’s the cult fandom of the Mera Peak that places it as Berghaus’ greatest hit. Taking its name from the epic Mera Peak in Nepal, the jacket is a true piece of performance outerwear with the cultural credentials to back it up. Inspired by the Trango’s crossover success, the Mera Peak was introduced as a versatile all-purpose jacket for mountain and urban conditions alike. Its dayglo colours provided high visibility on the slopes, but given its release at the height of the UK rave scene in 1991, you can’t help but wonder if designers had ravers in mind too. Its tri-colour scheme was a major draw for working-class youth in the North, where jacket heads, cosmic scousers, ram raiders, ravers and ramblers embraced the same fierce loyalty as those who had already been wearing Berghaus in the great outdoors for decades. For this new cohort, the major difference was that it represented more than function. It was a validation of respect. “You kept your jacket on when you go to a club because that was your status symbol,” says Ollie Evan, of @toohotlimited. The Mera Peak’s status as a club classic soon trickled down to the schoolyard, where often the only form of self-expression came via your choice of jacket. Those too young to attend clubs proudly wore them while loitering outside. “It was the perfect companion for standing in a park all night in Winter.” The Mera Peak is in many ways a piece of wearable history. That’s why Berghaus are reissuing it for AW24. The epitome of style, function and comfort, the jacket rewards you with the type of self-assurance and confidence it takes to tackle any extreme, whether it’s scaling peaks or cutting about in the streets.
