I’m starting a new series today with selections from great filmmakers, producers and people working in the world of docs.

First up, @rossmcelweefilms

I’d struggle to think of another director who’s turned the camera on himself quite like Ross. If you haven’t seen Sherman’s March, please go and check it out. He’s given us a list of his 5 favourite documentaries.

His latest film, Remake, might be his most personal yet. Following the death of his son Adrian, Ross looks back through decades of family footage, questioning what it means to have spent so much of his life filming the people closest to him.

It’s out in cinemas now and is also screening at Ojai Documentary Festival next week.

I have had some discussions recently with people who work in documentary film making. Lately they say it has been a struggle and it is perhaps going through a transformative phase as the world has a short attention span now and we are constantly bombarded with new content and an algorithmic formula that makes monkeys of us all. Inquiry into artistic and intellectual landscapes is a practice now, like learning the piano or writing a book. It takes dedication of your time and a willingness to probe the depths of your mind to ask questions, see other perspectives and learn. The term
“documentary” was coined in a 1926 by Robert Flaherty, defining it as “the creative treatment of actuality”. This might become my new mantra. This coming week, October 26-30, the Hotel El Roblar and The Ojai Playhouse are hosting The Ojai Documentary Film Festival. They are presenting numerous documentaries over the week with additional in person conversations that are bound to be stimulating and thought provoking. It is worth supporting this sort of filmmaking as the stories of our human experiences are more important than ever right now. You can check out ojaidocumentaryfilmfestival.com for information and lists of films.

Hotel El Roblar in Ojai was the perfect spot to set up camp for the night before making our way to Sequoia National Park. A little rest before the next adventure, although I would’ve happily extended my hotel stay. Ruff-ing it is a relative term, after all.

Naturally, I packed a few @butfirstwest favorites from their upcoming Base Camp Collection. Because what’s the point of exploring somewhere new if you can’t look good doing it?

The trees in Sequoia were pretty impressive, I’ll give them that. But I wasn’t about to let a few thousand years of growth steal my spotlight.

Travel, music, food, history, design, and beauty are big inspirations for us at See You Soon. We love LA, but there’s truly nothing like taking a road trip away. Driving through Benedict Canyon, sunset on the 101, and a seafood tower at @rorys_place_ojai (loved the caviar inclusion).

Our first time at @ojaideerlodge made for the perfect date night. We got to see @jennydianelewis (one of my favorite artists since I was 12!) and one of her bands @naftheband. Loved chatting with @erika_spring and learning about @alix_brown. Y’all are so cool! Somehow I’d never heard NAF’s 2016 project until last night, even though I own the Give a Damn tee and have been giving a damn my whole life.

Also loved checking out @theroblar and learning the history of this 1920 building. In the ‘70s it became The Oaks at Ojai, a women-focused fitness resort and spa, and now it’s beautifully restored into a one-of-a-kind hotel.

Thanks, Ojai, for the fabulous time! 💖🥰 Now we’re off to get our friends married!

P.S. If you made it this far, this is exactly why I have a Substack 😂 (link in bio)
