At my cousin’s wedding in Toronto—the rhythm of two blades against a hot griddle, kotthu roti chopped to order.

For anyone unfamiliar: kotthu roti is chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables, egg, curry, and spices—the rhythmic clang of the blades is as much a signature of the dish as the taste itself, a piece of street food craft that’s traveled with the diaspora from Sri Lanka to cities like Toronto.

It’s the kind of unscripted moment I keep coming back to in our work with @humanitiestruck on food and sound as living archive, playing out at a family celebration rather than in a research setting.

What stories can a simple flatbread tell? Join The Roti Collective (@theroticollective )led by @dr.mariamdurrani, as they share research on the connections between South Asian, Caribbean, and East African food traditions in DC. Through stories of migration, memory, and resilience, they’ll explore how roti connects communities across generations and borders and invite you to be part of their growing community research project.

The @publicethnographylab Summer Pocket Talks are a series of interactive, open-to-all seminars on critical topics, held in partnership with @dcpubliclibrary. Each session has its own theme, and attendees will hear from thinkers from the social sciences and humanities, be able to ask questions and discuss with speakers and other attendees, and connect with other interested in pressing topics. We're honored to interview Dr. Mariam Durrani for our How-to series on her experience navigating the Islamophobic harassment in academia.

In Spring of 2022, Dr. Durrani resigned from a tenure-track position at Hamilton College due to ongoing incidents of anti-Muslim and other kinds of harassment from right-wing elements on and around campus. In this interview, we explore the question: "How to deal with academic harassment?"

Dr. Mariam Durrani is currently a Professional Lecturer in the School of International Service at American University in Washington, D.C. Her research projects engage with imperialism from a decolonial feminist approach. Her current book project examines how students in Pakistan and the United States negotiate the United States Wars on "Terror". She also operates The Roti Collective, which analyzes practices of roti-making and consumption that have transformed through global migration.

Thanks to Dr. Durrani for being willing to share her insights and wisdom with all of us, especially when these cases of academic bullying and harassment tend to be swept under the carpet. In turn, it was our honor to be able to help keep this as a public archive.

I was watching the live from @blindianproject last night with @dr.mariamdurrani and there was a part of the conversation on roti.

This is something I talk about a lot (on my stories) with regards to the crossovers of different cultures and foods. How integrated certain staples are, and how we have variations of the same foods.

Ultimately, I feel this is true throughout the world, I often joke with my Mexican friends how I think they are secret Pakistani's 😂😂 really because, we have more in common than not (as an example)

Anyways, after last night's convo, I remembered, a million years back, I had made this video of 'sekhna my roti' 😂 and I wanted to pay a little homage to this new page I discovered through Mariam called @theroticollective.

Thank you Jonah and Mariam for that wonderful live last night. Maybe I really do need to do a proper tutorial on Pakistani roti ❤️❤️🙏🏽🙏🏽

So excited to celebrate @dr.feministsnap this week! Her sis @farha_bt says “Dr. Mariam Durrani is an assistant Professor of Anthropology. And it's finally time to recognizing her amazing work as a Bipoc feminist scholar. Her book project "Imperial Optic: Pakistani Muslim Youth, Race and Mobility" interrogates how Pakistani Muslim college students encounter the global war 'on terror' in Lahore and NY.

If you know me, you know I love roti. I love all types - naan, roti, paratha, daal puri, roti canai, mughlai paratha, shukna ruti, aloo paratha, Malaysian packaged paratha - they all bring me joy. I have paratha in the morning for suhoor with aloo bhaji and eggs, and sometimes I travel all the way to Liberty Avenue to pick up Trinidadian roti. Whether you’re Punjabi or Indo Caribbean, South Indian or Sri Lankan, roti has a story and a unique tradition. I’m moderating a panel and roti demo on November 22 at @asianartsphilly with the @theroticollective on roti’s unique history, learning about how entire economies and colonial histories were driven by flour and roti. Come through!
