Paying VERY close attention to the questions set by Justin for the Malaysia Sommelier Competition. 👀🍷

It was a short weekend trip — mainly to surprise and support my dear friends on the committee who worked so hard to put this competition together.

This is one of the things I love most about our wine community.

It goes beyond borders.

Malaysians, Taiwanese and Japanese working in Singapore were all there, supporting in different ways. Different countries, different backgrounds, but everyone coming together to help the community grow.

And watching my friends shine on stage…

I was SO proud, like a mamasan going around telling everyone, “I KNOW THEM!!!” 🤣

To all my friends who competed — you are seriously brave. Standing on that stage, being tested in front of judges and an audience takes courage.

I wish I had that courage!

Regardless of the result, I am incredibly proud of all of you. 🧡

And thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this weekend, even in my own little way.

This community has given me so much, and I’ll always be happy to show up for the people in it. 🍷

Thanks jiejie @sylviertee for sharing this photo 😘

Thanks @hans.ong16 for the batik to cover my leg 😅##

And always delighted to meet my 爆炸頭 brother @ian.dai.hongjing 🤣🤣🤣

Emerging as Champion was Arthur Chang, Sommelier at 67 Pall Mall Singapore, who swept four of the competition’s top honours—Champion, Best in Theory, Best in Service and the Cepas de Chile Award.

Chin Voon Ping of Potager Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur, finished as First Runner-Up and received the Best in Blind Tasting Award, while Aaron Liew of Grand Vin Singapore was named Second Runner-Up. The inaugural Best Foreign Sommelier Award was presented to Daisuke Kawai.

The Championship culminated in a live Grand Final, where finalists were evaluated across eight challenges by a distinguished panel of leading wine and hospitality professionals from Malaysia and Singapore, led by Chief Judge Britt Ng, Wine Director of Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the grand final of the Malaysia Best Sommelier Championship 2026 organised by @sommelier.association_my

I've long held a serious admiration for sommeliers and the way they seamlessly combine a broad, deep working knowledge of wines with grace and poise when serving said wines. As a child, I was fascinated by the way they'd glide around the room, sometimes slipping in dry jokes and a wink, all while making it all look totally effortless. They were the coolest. The very picture of charm and elegance in a suit.

During yesterday's final, I got to see the participants put through their paces in a series of high-pressure simulations designed to test their ability to adapt and remain composed in high stakes situations. They were pitched curveball after curveball and it was genuinely edge-of-the-seat stuff. Congratulations to all the participants and especially to the winner — may this competition continue to improve the sommelier profession in Malaysia, and amongst Malaysian wine professionals working abroad too 🇲🇾

The Malaysia Best Sommelier Championship 2026, organised by SOMLAY, concluded after three days of competition that challenged participants in blind tasting, wine knowledge, food pairing, decanting, technical service and real-world guest scenarios. This year’s edition also marked the debut of the Best Foreign Sommelier Trophy, reflecting Malaysia’s growing role as a regional hospitality and wine destination.

Arthur Chang of 67 Pall Mall Singapore emerged as overall champion, with VP Chin of Potager KL named first runner-up and Aaron Liew of Grand Vin Singapore taking second runner-up. Their performances demonstrated the depth of knowledge, precision and professionalism required at the highest level of the profession.

Beyond recognising the country’s top sommeliers, the championship continues to serve as an important platform for developing talent, encouraging knowledge exchange and raising standards across Malaysia’s wine and hospitality industry.
