This is how it started, and this is how it ended. 🙂 Learn Mastering Effects Disasters: Exploding A Head with Andy Schoneberg @theschoneberg!

About the course: Our Facebook fans wanted to see how to do an exploding head. We went to special makeup effects veteran, genius problem solver and 2-Time Emmy winner Andy Schoneberg (The Walking Dead, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park) and asked him what he would do.

Lacking the time and resources for what a proper exploding head effect would require (pyrotechnics, lifecasting, and molds of the actor at the very least) we assumed it couldn't be done. But Andy told us that if we could find a head, any head, he could probably make it work.

With absolutely no prep and only a frightful silicone head over a resin underskull available for the effect..the resulting lesson ended up as a perfect--if dramatized--example of a situation every veteran effects artists has experienced sometime in their career: The Effects Disaster.

Found some nostalgic photos from Predators (2010) at @theofficialknbefxgroup

Predator head sculpt by Joey.
Body sculpt by Joey and @studio_aki
Berserker yellow foam head by Michealle.
Berserker body sculpted by @jaremy_aiello and me

Dead body painted by @wasnerkevin
River Ghost painted by @mike_obrien_designs @caseylovedesigns
I remember I finished painting the Predator by me but unfortunately it didn’t make it into the final version. I was a little disappointed at the time. 😂

It was a very rushed production, but looking back now, it was such a fun and special time. 😆

I wonder if those days will ever come back again.

Batman Returns was released 34 years ago! Here is a look back at our 30th anniversary celebration with the cast and crew including a phenomenal demonstration by the man who taught Michelle Pfeiffer how to knock mannequin heads off with the crack of a whip, weapons master Anthony De Longis. There were phenomenal makeup demos produced by @sonofpumpkinhead with @therealve, @ronnielspecter and @yolandatoussieng, a lovely video message by @actordougjones and all of this done by so many amazing artists, models and actors 👏👏👏

@vampiresofthevelvetlounge in theatres Friday! March 20th. My friends, I’m so excited! 🧛‍♀️

Directed by @adamshermanfilm starring @menasuvari @dichenlachman rosasalazarbr @actuallystephendorff

Huge thank you to @itsyoboigeorge @adamshermanfilm @mickbo3 @oliveryi @_noemi_santo_ @burns2burns for trusting me to lead the makeup fx department. We shot this in Savannah, Georgia back in 2023 right in the middle of the strikes. It was really challenging to navigate the production during that time - but we successfully completed it.

All the prosthetics and props for this movie were made and coordinated by @oliveryi @theschoneberg @tj_monstermaker, supported by @cinemamakeupschool

Endless gratitude to my key makeup fx artist @patrickbmakeup for going on this crazy bloody ride with me. I couldn’t have done this without your expertise and skillset!

Big love to @coreymakeup makeup dept head, @je_chavez key makeup, @ajdoeshair hair dept head, @shelleycaudill costume dept head, @ejk920 @ilya.churinov @hartnettryan cdk922 spfx department, @tminusproductions @nickbenseman stunt department for the collaboration, support, and smooth teamwork throughout🙌

See you in theaters March 20!
