Terminalia pendula
Syn.: Anogeissus pendula
Family: Combretaceae
.
.
Dhok is one of the characteristic trees of Rajasthan’s dry, rocky hill forests. It is particularly prominent in the Aravalli Range and forms an important component of the dry deciduous forests of the Vindhyan landscape around Kota Division. Its small leaves, drooping branches and strong adaptation to rocky slopes make it a defining tree of these hill ecosystems.
Dhok plays an important ecological role in dry deciduous forests by providing vegetation cover on rocky hills, helping stabilise soil and reduce erosion, and offering habitat and shelter for insects, birds and other wildlife.

During a field observation, I noticed two Lemon Pansies (Junonia lemonias) interacting closely. One individual was following the other and repeatedly bringing its antennae into contact with the other individual’s body.

The interaction appeared to involve close following and antennae contact. Based on the behaviour observed, I wondered whether this could be related to mate recognition or pre-mating/courtship behaviour.

However, this is my personal field observation and interpretation, and I am not certain about the exact function of this behaviour.

If I have interpreted it incorrectly, I would sincerely appreciate corrections, references, or insights from butterfly enthusiasts and experts. 🦋🔍
