I’ve finally managed to catch my breath after a hectic few weeks and begin to reflect on my residency at The Straw Yard here in Berwick-upon-Tweed. I’ve been genuinely moved by the heartfelt responses to everything I’ve shared with the people of Berwick and beyond. To have so many people come along to hear about my adventures as an artist, embrace the opportunity to experience clay in a whole new way, and connect so personally with the stories of the WW1 servicemen whose experiences I’ve explored and interpreted throughout much of my career has been an absolute privilege. Huge thanks to the wonderful Straw Yard team — Ben, Oli, Alice, Hannah and all the volunteers — for making me and all our visitors so welcome and everything so effortless to share. But my biggest thanks go to everyone who came along, from Berwick and much further afield, and made the exhibition and events such a success. Your curiosity, generosity and willingness to engage with the work, and me, have meant more to me than I can say. I love this town. Artist in Residence over & out! . Well, that’s the end of this incredible residency with world renowned multidisciplinary artist, Paddy Hartley. . We would like to say a huge thank you to Paddy for this inspiring collaboration. Working with Paddy has been a real pleasure and a true honour to have his work and energy here at The Straw Yard. . Thank you to all involved and to you for coming to support this residency, here in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed! . That’s our final residency and the end of our Workshop Series for 2026. Saturday 17th October is your final chance to catch my exhibition ‘Body of Memory’ @thestrawyardberwick here in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and discover the stories of four remarkable men bound together by war, trauma and pioneering surgical innovation. I’ll be in the gallery throughout the day, from 11am–4pm, and would love to tell you more about Harold, Henry, Walter and William, and the extraordinary stories behind the work. Penultimate Day! . Today, tomorrow, no more… . Friday 16th & Saturday 17th are the final days of this extraordinary exhibition here at The Straw Yard! . BODY OF MEMORY: A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION BY PADDY HARTLEY . FREE EXHIBITION AT THE STRAW YARD NO BOOKING NECESSARY . OPENING TIMES: 11am - 4pm each day Gates close at 4pm . There will be refreshments available to purchase from The Straw Yard bar. . Body of Memory presents a rare opportunity to see and handle a selection of Paddy Hartley’s embroidered fabric work revealing the personal histories of First World War servicemen who underwent pioneering facial reconstructive surgery and the politics of memorialisation. Through sculpture and historical research, Hartley considers the body and garments he uses, as a record of experience, and explores how the individual stories of men transformed by war are preserved, reconstructed and absorbed into collective memory. Hartley will also present his film Papaver Rhoeas, which documents the creation of remembrance-themed poppies made from lambs’ heart tissue. His is a unique reimagining of one of the most recognisable symbols of remembrance using biological material and inspired by the politicisation of remembrance. Shifting the focus from the familiar language of commemoration towards the physical reality of mortality, sacrifice and loss. Together, the works explore the relationship between personal history and collective remembrance, asking not simply how we remember those affected by conflict, but who and what is remembered, how those memories are constructed, reconstructed, and what might be lost in the process. . To note: Although we are a dog friendly venue, we ask that customers please refrain from bringing their dogs to any of the Artist in Residence with Paddy Hartley events. That’s a wrap! - Season 1 of the LAB/OR8 Podcast is now fully live! With 6 episodes; 5 fantastic interviews and hundreds of listeners, we feel immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to create and share something new with you. - LAB/OR8 is still very new, and is currently run by a team of just 2 people. Despite this, the reception has been incredibly overwhelming, and incredibly positive. We cannot thank you all enough for listening and following along with us from the very beginning. - What we’ve achieved so far would have been impossible without any help. It’s been wonderful to see and hear people’s responses to the work, but more importantly, to see them connect with the stories of these men — both through the work itself and in conversations with me. I haven’t exhibited this work for ten years, so this is a rare opportunity to experience it in person, and to get up close and handle the pieces yourself. The small selection of embroidered uniforms that forms the heart of Body of Memory @thestrawyardberwick has been exhibited and published widely for more than 20 years. It’s a real privilege to know that individual pieces are now held in the permanent collections of @madmuseum in New York, @nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, @nam_london and @wellcomecollection. I’ll be in the gallery from 11am–4pm this Friday and Saturday, 16th and 17th October — the final two days of the exhibition. If you’re in Berwick, do come along. The thing is about Berwick upon Tweed, it's totally over stimulating. Handsome old buildngs, bridges, river and sea views ofcourse, but add to that the extraordinary cultural offer of the town. Phew. Hot on the heels of the @berwickopenstudios , last week saw the @berwicklitfest and it's demanding schedule of interesting author talks, an opening of a group show @old_brewery_studios , a Print Exchange and lecture at Jackal on Hide Hill (ongoing exhib and thankyou @janeporterillustrator for the beautiful print), and an artist commission, sound and light work by Ed Carter illuminating and celebrating the 200th birthday of the lighthouse. I managed yet another visit on the final day to the intense and very moving Joan Eardley Catterline and the Sea exhibition at the Granary Gallery. Thankyou @maltingsberwick and James Lowther for this remarkable show that understandably drew visitors from afar to see it. Do not miss the beautiful film and textile installation by artist Paddy Hartley on until Saturday @strawyardBerwick .Think you know Paddy's work as mainly ceramics. Think again! This is a really wonderful show. This is a small town that delivers so much, of such quality. Now for a rest.
