As someone who paints primarily on the street, I get to meet all kinds of people, have conversations with them, learn about them, allow them into my world, and find common ground, which is one of the main reasons I enjoy plein air painting so much.

Something about plein air painters and street photographers makes us find each other. We often see the same things: appreciating light and shadow, documenting the architecture of a bygone era, or capturing the quintessential markings of contemporary life.

There is a passion to express and to find expression in others; I love how street photographers capture people on the street, at work, in their element, conveying life as they see it in a single snapshot, or how they see a city slipping into darkness as the first flicker of nighttime light glimmers. They tell stories through their lens, capturing the human emotions we all share and can relate to. Photography is a datestamp; though often timeless, it belongs not only to today but to future archives; the artist and the subject share a symbiotic relationship. The artist needs the subject, and the artist’s creation often immortalizes the subject. This may sound hyperbolic, but it’s an interdependent ecosystem. A world where the creative spirit is not only found but thrives.

The following are street photographers I have met from all over the world and thoroughly enjoyed engaging with, who have photographed me in my element. I have chosen two photos from each of them-

The last one is my wife, Janet, who first taught me about street Photography in the East Village in 1993 with her Pentax K-1000, the same girl who bought me my first Pentax K-1000 for my birthday, who showed me the magic of composition and black-and-white film.
and white film.
