A study of Suffolk: people, rural life, farming and conservation, by professional photographer Richard Allenby-Pratt.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This month we want to shine a spotlight on a local photography group who meet on a Friday morning in Saxmundham 📷

PhotoShed is led by photographer Richard Allenby-Pratt of @thesuffolkproject, who sets the group a brief at the start of each session, challenging them to head out around Saxmundham and photograph a particular subject or theme.

These photos are from a session where the theme was simply brown. 🤎

It’s a really lovely group of people, with a huge range of photography experience, but everyone is there with the same enthusiasm for taking photos. There’s plenty of encouragement and support, and at the end of each session everyone chooses their favourite two or three photos to share with the group.

Richard then goes through them, offering feedback and getting everyone talking about the different ways they’ve approached the same brief.

A really nice example of people coming together locally, learning from each other and seeing Saxmundham a little differently.

HURT NOT THE TREES. 2026.
An elegy for felled trees on the Suffolk Coast, cut down in recent years to make way for heavy vehicles transporting materials to the Sizewell C construction site. It explores themes of environmental destruction and loss.

The title is taken from Charlotte Mew’s 1922 poem, The Trees Are Down, a poignant lament for the Plane trees in Euston Square, London, that were felled the same year. The poem mirrors the anger and profound loss felt by local people in Suffolk today. It begins with the epigraph from Revelation,
‘Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees. .’

Porcelain, Suffolk brick, oxide, stain and glaze.
Assemblage approximately H. 42 W. 49 D. 36
