“North Korea’s got practice missiles, and I still check yahoo, cuz we both got attachment issues.”

Pawel Jaworski exemplifies, what I argue, is the most important principle of guard playing, ATTACHMENTS (or grips if you’re not an asshole).

Fighting for, and defending your opponents grips isn’t particularly novel. Hell in the gi, it’s nonnegotiable. In terms of the No-Gi landscape, it’s something I’m noticing separates the best guard players from those who cosplay bottom position when it becomes clear they can’t pass.

Inversely guard passing has a similar dynamic principle, where it’s best proponents , treat grips and attachments as variables to be respected, planned for, and addressed with urgency. A good of example this is @margotciccarelli when she spoke about viewing your body as a surface your opp is trying to walk on with their feet, and your role (as the passer) should be to make that “surface” uneven and difficult to navigate.

Pawel takes this concept further by using his grips to climb up his opp, each grip compounding on the next towards his leglock destination. I argue that the reason someone like @mateusz_szczecinski would say Pawel’s guard is difficult to pass, has to do with Pawel approaching his opp’s grips as direct obstruction of his route. And Although grip fighting is a specialty for him. In this match and many others he’s also proven crafty enough to change his intended destination/target altogether.

I don’t think anyone can do deny that Pawel Jaworski, is who we should be studying right now.

Giancarlo displayed top-level technique, patiently working through the positions and securing the finish with precision.

Ronaldo Jr., though at a weight disadvantage, showed tremendous resilience. He defended, escaped, and prolonged the match against one of the toughest competitors in the game, making Giancarlo work for every step.

A clash of sharp technique and unbreakable grit.

Luke Griffith displayed incredible discipline and composure, even while fatigued from a tough previous match. Under one of the most dominant mount games in the sport, he stayed calm, denied openings, and showed how high-level defense can be just as impressive as offense.

Felipe Pena, meanwhile, showed why he’s among the best — patient, calculated, and strategic. Reading Luke’s reactions, he understood that forcing a finish from mount wasn’t the path forward, and instead shifted his approach without wasting time or energy.

Two elite athletes showcasing different sides of mastery: composure in defense and wisdom in offense.

Sometimes ppl are surprised when I say Elisabeth Clay is in my top 5 fav grapplers . She’s one of the most dangerous and craftiest leglockers in the game. MFs really forget she finished Ffion in the Polaris (essentially absolute) tournament. More than a few 💎s in this one. Enjoy 😊 #leglocker #juijitsu #nogi
