I never saw myself as a vintage watch guy.

For years, I was drawn to modern references, new releases, and the excitement that comes with the latest hype. I was convinced the new thing was always the better thing.

Last year while on a brief stay in Zürich I came across a vintage double red Sea Dweller in a Goldsmith shop and something shifted. I made the decision then that someday I would get a “Vintage” sub to replace my modern sea dweller.

Last month this 1971 Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 “Red Sub” came up for sale at my AD - @bucherer_usa. And a @rolex CPO piece in near perfect condition! Needless to say, they now have another Sea Dweller in the CPO case for sale 😉

There’s something special about wearing a watch that’s been on wrists for over 50 years. The faded tritium, the acrylic crystal, the subtle imperfections that only time can create. It feels less like owning a watch and more like becoming the next steward of its story.

Now I understand why collectors chase great vintage pieces.

At my age, the only thing I like better than cake for my birthday is a new watch. So I bought two 🥴 🤯

When I first got into watches, the @omega boutique in the King of Prussia mall was the first watch-focused store that I ever went to. I was 21, wearing my Seiko SKX007, overwhelmed by everything that was on display in the store, and had no intentions of purchasing a watch that day. The store manager at the time spent about two hours showing me a variety of watches, talking to me about Omega, and never once made me feel like I was wasting her time. This experience was the perfect start to a hobby that I have continued over the past 10ish years.
Since then, I have visited that same boutique multiple times, spending a considerable amount of time talking to Danny (the best person I’ve met in the watch world - hands down), and my collection has grown quite a bit.
The other day, they happened to have the white dial Speedmaster Professional out on display and I fell in love with it the minute I put it on my wrist. I had no intentions of buying a watch, especially this one since I already have the traditional black dial Speedy in my collection, but here we are… This is the first white dial watch that I have ever owned, and I think that it just may be the watch that gets me to take my Submariner off my wrist for more than a day or two.
Thank you to everyone at the KOP Omega Boutique that dealt with me trying the watch on, taking it off, and trying it on repeatedly for at least an hour. A special thank you to Danny for always being a pleasure to talk to, a genuinely great person, and helping me decide that I should buy the watch - stopping in and talking to you is always our favorite part about visiting the mall.

Ok…after wearing for a few days, I’ve got to say the new @omega Speedmaster FOIS ‘24 IS the perfect Speedmaster for me. Wearability wise, not sure this combination could be any more comfortable given the flat-link bracelet paired with the 39.7mm 2998 case, both of which also used on the EW 321 model as well and equally comfortable. The little over 13mm height given how it’s split between the caseback, mid case, bezel and new sapphire crystal shape just fit together proportionately in perfect balance IMHO and work to punch out the sporty nature of the Speedmaster without being a hockey puck. The finishing on the bracelet and case are great…really does elevate these 2998 case models from the classic current 42mm speedmasters (though I loved mine too). The grey/blue dial is simply perfect to me…the color is dark and subtle, requiring the right light for the blues to pop but this also brings a special factor to the FOIS that I find lacking from many of the previous similar black/grey/charcoal only dials of past and present, EW included. The other part that separates this reference from the 321 and makes the FOIS my first pick are the alpha hands…there’s just something special about them and it hits the vintage aesthetic out of the park to me on this ref and combined with all of the modern updates, makes this the PERFECT vintage/modern style and sets the bar higher for any company looking to do the same kind of thing. All in all, the FOIS may be best bang for the buck in its price sector, and I HIGHLY reccomend one if you’re a fan of vintage but don’t want to spend 20-30k for a good 2998 and still want something direct from Omega.
