Last week’s Community Builders Meetup was our first, but it won’t be our last.

We had a packed room at MBK Cambridge with 35 people who are thinking outside the box to support Cambridge. Nonprofit and city leaders joined our inaugural Making Good Minigrant recipients and other neighbors to meet, create connections, and build community.

Ty Bellitti, MBK Cambridge’s co-director, spoke to the group about his team’s journey since 2019, evolving from an idea into an education and leadership hub for young adults and families.

“We all start at a point, asking, ‘is my idea worthy of being funded?’” said Ty B. “You might be here for a minigrant tonight, but if you stay committed to whatever your north star is, something small can turn into something large.”

Three minigrant recipients shared reflections on their first six months implementing their ideas.

Winston Liao, a chef and poet, is making a “Desktop Art” vending machine to lower the barriers for local artists to sell art prints and zines and will be placing them in community gathering spaces including The Foundry.

Zhonghe (Elena) Li, an artist who started Wildcrane Art, hosted free community art workshops at the Sacramento Street community garden.

Kerri Hickman kicked off a program called Little Citizens Circle, instilling in children ages 0-5 a love of reading and age-appropriate awareness of big concepts like equity, identity, and belonging.

Christina Turner, CCF’s vice president of programs and grantmaking, noted that the meetup was a pilot effort to engage residents in a new way, and in a low-stakes setting. “The idea for this gathering was only possible because of the minigrant ideas, and only possible because of the space that we’re in, the idea that led to MBK Cambridge,” said Christina. “But your being here tonight shows us that we’re on to something.”

Our minigrant application has re-opened for a Fall cycle. Cambridge residents can submit their ideas now through October 26! Learn more and spread the word to your neighbors and networks. cambridgecf.org/minigrants

LA = Lazy Arse or LIVING ABUNDANTLY•Your Choice

If you are not around teenagers consistently, you may not be aware. We are swimming in a culture of cyber-zombies, addicted to distraction and afflicted with interruption. Many young & Older people are nonresistant to the piracy of their potential. The misuse of technology is ruining the minds of too many. We were ALL meant to make history in OUR own authentic way. Don’t let the Creator in YOU continue to be KILLED. Don’t drift, lay dormant or experience the Living DEATH caused by DIGITAL DEMENTIA.
