Bebop Review 85: The Marvels (2023)

The Marvels faced quite an uphill battle from the start. Coming out during the actors and writers strike, and director Nia DaCosta leaving during post-production, this movie still turns out fine despite its lack of hype and lack of care from Marvel Studios.

Dar-Benn is the most glaring issue here, she is just a terrible villain throughout. Never feeling like an actual threat. The film moves at a quick pace, but that does make the plot of the main characters switching places feel a lot more hectic and threatening. The chemistry between all three leads is quite solid. Iman Vellani is incredible as Kamala Khan and brings so much charisma to the role in every scene she’s in. Brie Larson is so much better this time around as Carol Danvers, as she’s no longer stoic while containing more personality and vulnerability in this role. Teyonah Parris brings plenty of heart as Monica Rambeau, and her story of reigniting with Captain Marvel is well done. The action is also pretty good, as the power-swapping story leads to some very creative choreography and storytelling. There are some tonal Inconsistencies that are detrimental to the story however. The production design is also much better than the first film, as some of the space settings and planets here are very cool. Nick Fury is unfortunately just comic relief here, as he’s more of a comedian in this film than the compelling supporting character that he was for years.

Despite these issues, The Marvel’s is still a pretty enjoyable film and a huge step up over Captain Marvel. With its great leads (Especially Ms Marvel), creative action, and more joyful tone, it works so much better than its predecessor. While it does suffer from a bad villain, often rushed pacing, and some other ideas being wasted, it’s still a film that has heart and direction. And that post credits scene was one of the best post-Endgame.

Bebop Review 84: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

Not only did James Gunn leave the MCU on a high note, he once again delivered one of the best MCU films and one of the best comic book films ever. An emotional, funny, well-directed, and satisfying film that is so full of heart. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 pulls no punches on its way to perfectly finishing this all-time great trilogy.

The heart and emotional center of the film is Rodney Raccoon, as his story is heartbreaking and very well done. The High Evolutionary played by Chukwudi Iwuji works in giving Rocket’s adventure so much emotional weight and investment. This film is emotional in ways that few MCU films have ever achieved. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Bradley Cooper all bring their best performances as their respective characters, and their chemistry is simply the best that the MCU has ever seen. Each character gets to shine, grows as characters, and have important roles in the film. The amount of solid side characters also helps with this films world-building. James Gunn once again finds a great balance in tone as the humor is great, snd once again never undermines the emotional and dramatic moments of the film. The story is excellent, has exciting stakes, and is a love letter to what made these characters so beloved. The Oscar-nominated visuals are also breathtaking, and the action is still top notch here. The hallway fight is one if the best action sequences seen in any comic book film as it captures everything great about this team. And the soundtrack is once again impressive as it perfectly fits in each scene that it’s utilized.

From its amazing sense of closure, wonderful character arcs, great directing, amazing production design, and one of the best stories in any Marvel film, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is a triumph, and a perfect farewell to Marvel’s most unlikely heroes.

Bebop Review 83: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)

Director Peyton Reed has certainly mastered the art of soulless filmmaking, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania isn’t just one without any soul, it’s one that is a disgrace to its character, the superhero genre, and comic books in general.

The film completely wastes Kang the conquerer by making him constantly ineffective. While Jonathan Majors tries to make him a threat, this script makes portrays him as a joke that can’t even beat Ant-Man despite him being a villain that is supposed to threaten every timeline. While Paul Rudd Is still likable as Scott Lang, the script gives him little to work with and just makes him feel like a reactor to everything. Michelle Pfeiffer does well despite the script making her look moronic by having her refuse to explain any important information simply to pad for time. Kathryn Newton is okay as Cassie Lang, but is written to be very generic. Evangeline Lilly feels more like a background character here, despite Wasp supposedly being meant to be a main character. The quantum realm is a let down, as it his hyped up world is quite dull and has flawed world-building. It’s pretty much characters going through bland CGI environments that feel like a non-rendered PS2 game. MODOK is somehow the worst part of this whole film, as one of Marvel’s stranger villains is one of the ugliest visuals in modern cinema and is boiled down to so many cringeworthy jokes. The humor is especially forced, as it dismantles any existing tension throughout.

With bad writing, awful world-building, two wasted villains, a lack of direction, and zero reason to care, this is one of the worst superhero films in the entire MCU, and one that proves how safe Marvel often plays with unique ideas.

Bebop Review 82: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was given a challenging task of having to honor its original star, Chadwick Boseman. And while it doesn’t reach the heights of the first film, it does succeed in delivering a great tribute to Boseman, and delivers a solid emotional sequel.

What the film really succeeds at is handling grief. Instead of just rushing past the absence of T’Challa, the story lets Wakanda and its individuals mourn, which gives the film emotional weight that many MCU films haven’t had since post-Endgame. Angela Bassett puts in one of the best performances in comic book history as Queen Ramonda, delivering authority, dignity, and heartbreak in every scene she’s apart of. Namor is also great, as Tenoch Huerta gives him some solid presence, and Talokan is a visually interesting civilization. Unlike a lot of recent villains in the MCU, Namor is actually fleshed out and has believable motivations, making him a character that works on screen despite many previously believing that he could never. The production value is great, as the score, costumes, and world building are crafted well by Ryan Coogler’s superb direction. However, many scenes are undercut by forced humor In a film that is trying to have actual emotion. While Riri Williams feels very forced to sell her spinoff series instead of feeling like was written in as a real character not the plot, and she’s written like most annoying side characters in Marvel. The CIA subplot is somehow worse, as anytime it cuts to them, all momentum dies down. The Marvel formula’s tired tropes staying on board causes the film to fall short of any real greatness.

With that said, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still a respectful tribute to Chadwick Boseman, brilliantly introduces a great new villain, and is very well acted for the most parts

Bebop Review 81: Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Shoutout to Taika Waititi for revitalizing Thor with Ragnorak, and then making him a colossal joke with this dumpster fire. Thor: Love and Thunder throws away the previous films character development and emotion that were balanced with comedy, and just commits to being a completely awful comedy that feels written by a robot.

Every scene is a bad attempt at humor, even when it tries to tackle issues like grief, trauma, cancer and kidnapped citizens. Korg’s consistent interrupting, the screaming goats, and endless slapstick all feel like desperate attempts to keep engagement, and it constantly fails. Thor is incredible annoying, as any development he gained in both Avengers films is honestly as he’s regressed into an unlikable and immature clown. While Christian Bale is the strongest aspect in this film, he is wasted as Gorr thanks to him getting little screen time and little development. Jane Foster’s cancer story is also poorly handled, as it’s paced horribly and the constant bad comedy hurts all of its emotional weight. Nothing that this film tries to balance works because everything feels thrown together. The Guardians of the Galaxy end up being unnecessary as they add nothing to the story. The CGI looks unfinished at times, and the action is unimpressive, especially in the lifeless third act. The ending ends this bad story on a terrible note as the attempt at mb emotional conclusion falls completely flat.

Thor: Love and Thunder is an assassination to its title character, his lore, and the great development he had built up. A plethora of wasted characters, weak storytelling, laughable CGI, and the worst comedy seen in any MCU film to date. Even with a solid score and some good performances, this is a giant embarrassment.

Bebop Review 80: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness is one of the more stranger films in the MCU (pun intended), that’s definitely a compliment and criticism in some cases. Sam Raimi brings a style inspired by horror that makes for a unique entry that Botha’s creative visual effects, interesting imagery, and solid sequences. However, the script isn’t always reaching the intended heights of the film’s direction.

Benedict Cumberbatch is still perfect as Stephen Strange, and this film provides some solid character development for
Him. Strange finally comes to terms that he can’t control everything, and admitting his love for Christine while accepting that she might be happier without him shows emotional maturity that he hadn’t reached before. Elizabeth Olsen is incredible as Wanda as she throws herself into this role. Her villain arc however is an issue as she’s a murderous antagonist here, and that feels like a rushed choice considering the grief processing she had in WandaVision. The multiverse aspect is also underdeveloped as the realities visited are simply just for spectacle and fan service (and unlike Spider-Man: No Way Home, it doesn’t actually serve the story). The heroes from other worlds just act as fun cameos, and America Chavez has little character development despite how crucial she can be to a multiverse story. The writing also has bumps in the road because while some of the humor works, some of it also falls flat (“We want Ice cream” song is very cringeworthy). But while the tone can have issues, the action doesn’t as it is very creative and exciting. The two Doctor Strange’s battling is cleverly executed, and Raimi’s horror influence gives some us some memorable moments throughout.

Overall, this is still a pretty solid film despite some of its rushed, sloppy, and sometimes annoying moments. The good acting, creative visuals, stellar action, and intriguing themes certainly carry things here, even if this doesn’t fulfill its potential.

Bebop Review 79: Eternals (2021)

Eternals is a mess of a film that even Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao can’t salvage. While intriguing on paper, the story of these immortal people secretly forming humanity for thousands of years is incredibly boring, bloated and poorly paced. A movie that tries to be groundbreaking for its genre ends up forgetting that it needs an interesting story and characters first.

The cast is a huge issue as the film tries and fails to juggle 10 characters and most of them don’t get enough development and end up feeling hollow and underutilized. The chemistry is also the weakest among any MCU cast as there’s little emotion to be found. The pacing also has issues with the first act feeling bloated thanks to constant flashbacks and exposition to just fast forward the story through time without any development or intrigue. The film spends too much time introducing characters before any conflict actually happens. The tone is laughable since Eternals tries to be a serious examination of immortality and society, but constantly throws in bad humor and references that makes the setting seem like an awkward PowerPoint. Bad continuity aside, the Deviants are some of the worst villains in MCU history thanks to feeling rushed and unremarkable, and they could’ve been completely cut out of the film since the actual conflict with the main characters is more compelling without them.

Despite great cinematography, a few good performances, and some interesting concepts, Eternals is just a bad film with a mismanaged story and poorly utilized source material. Never knowing what it wants to be, and never feeling like an actual final product.

Bebop Review 78: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is certainly one of the most refreshing MCU projects in recently memory, and introduced a hero with exciting settings to a wider audience while bringing some great action, and an emotional tale revolving around family. It’s a solid watch even if it loses some steam thanks to its final act falling back on the same old Marvel tropes.

Simu Liu is really great as Shang-Chi, and brings so much personality to his character while making his struggles believable. The legendary Tony Leung is very impressive as Wenwu, and provides the MCU with one of its best and most interesting villains. His relationship with Shang-Chi is the heart of the film, and his actions bring some real weight to the story. Michelle Yeoh is also solid as Ying Nan, and adds plenty of depth. The action is incredible and well-choreographed, and makes the bus fight and construction site battle stand out moments that give Shang-Chi some uniqueness when compared to other MCU heroes. Unfortunately, the third act is where the film takes a nosedive, as this grounded and coherent tale turns into a stylish spectacle with no substance that is just full of CGI. The action and visuals get worse the longer this goes on, and makes this feel like a generic and soulless final battle. Awkwafina also hurts plenty of scenes as Katy, as her constant forced jokes make the film lose its emotional stakes throughout thanks to her usual poor attempt at comedy.

Overall, this film still succeeds thanks to its mostly great cast, emotional relationship between his hero and villain, great martial arts, and cultural identity that nails its lore. It’s a solid introduction to Shang-Chi despite it not sticking the landing and forcing some old tired tropes in.

Bebop Review 77: Black Widow (2021)

While Black Widow may have been a film that fans wanted for years, by the time it actually happened, the final product unfortunately never ended up justifying its existence. The story of Natasha Romanoff feels less like a story about her, and more of an excuse to go introduce characters for future projects. This leads to Black Widow’s final film feeling uneven and without a real identity throughout.

Scarlett Johansson is once again solid as as Natasha Romanoff, and Florence Pugh is unsurprisingly great as her sister Yelena. Their relationship is strongest aspect of the film and it gives Natasha some family dynamic to strengthen her characters personal depth. The films themes are quite sanitized than they should be for a character like Black Widow. A story about trafficking, the Red Room, Natasha’s past, and exploitation should really mean something, but the film tends to avoid digging into them to instead play things very safe and bland. The villains are also a huge letdown as Taskmaster is wasted and made for a predicable twist instead of the great villain the character could be. Dreykov is a bland villain, and that’s a shame for a character that caused Black Widow much trauma. The film also doesn’t have much tension going on despite some good action. The third act might be the biggest offender as this grounded thriller becomes yet another CGI spectacle that leads to a rushed climax. By the time the film ends, it feels like you watched a back door pilot for Yelena and other characters instead of a solo film that fans wanted. David Harbour’s Red Guardian also as painfully unfunny moments that makes some scenes worse, and a lot of the films comedy is honestly poor.

Overall, Black Widow is a letdown for fans of the character. While Johansson and Pugh are great together and have some solid action, a lot of its flaws point to a lazy story that could’ve easily been avoided. From the letdown the long-teased Budapest storyline, to the lack of feeling like an action Black Widow film, this is a film that clearly needed more thought, especially with how long fans waited.

Bebop Review 76: Avengers: Endgame

Avengers Endgame is an extremely satisfying conclusion to over a decade of storytelling built up in the MCU. While it does not try to outdo Infinity War in scale, it does concentrate on the emotional aftermath of what has occurred while showing how each character copes with what they went through. While not reaching the heights of its predecessor, it’s still a great finale to the Infinity Saga.

The cast once again shines as Robert Downey Jr. puts in one of his better performances as he gives Tony Stark’s joinery a fitting and emotional conclusion. Chris Evans gives the film plenty of heart as Steve Rogers, further defining the leadership and hope that the character embodies. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor takes a different direction as he struggles with the grief and failures that he’s lived through, and it does show plenty of humanity behind the comedic aspects. The Russo Brothers do a solid job of balancing the original Avengers while still spotlighting some to the remaining characters in a way that gives them some more depth. The quieter first half helps process the end of the last film while making the bombastic second half feel very satisfying thanks to its buildup. Alan Silvestri’s score is still great at capturing both heroic and emotional moments throughout. The final battle is fan service in a great way as the portals sequence, Captain America wielding Mjolnir, and the Avengers facing off against Thanos one last time are among the most iconic moments in superhero films. The conclusion for both Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are both very well done and feel quite earned based on their history in this universe. However, the time travel aspect can feel confusing and convoluted at times and does raise some questions about the MCU’s overall logic. And some moments can feel forced (the female characters all randomly on one spot). Thanos is still excellent despite less screen time and a lack of development for him here.

Overall, Avengers: Endgame is a satisfying conclusion for much of its established narratives. it is the payoff that Marvel fans deserved and was well worth the hype.
