Last Christmas @footpadnomadbooks gave me The Forgotten Home Child by @gengrahamauthor in a book exchange with #theeastendbookclub. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have since read another of her books. I was excited when the #pawsandpagesbookclub chose Come From Away as our February read, but need more excited to discover that the author would be joining us. (Thank you so much Michele and Genevieve)
What a great chat we had! I love how excited Genevieve made me about Canadian history. I know so little about it unfortunately. It was interesting to hear how she does her book research, and how she gets her ideas.
If you have not read any of her books, you have to! Genevieve creates characters with depth and compassion. She takes historical situations and humanizes them. Her approach to difficult subjects, such as PTSD and war, is realistic yet sensitive and understanding. Sometimes you dislike a character, but there always seems to be a glimmer of a redeeming quality, as there is in most human beings. I can wait to read more from the Baker family in my #netgalley copy of On Isabella Street.

QOTD: Do you belong to a book club?

⁉️ I have the old cover and think it more aptly portrays the story. Which one do you like? Have you read Genevieve Graham's uniquely Canadian fiction?

🥳 Tonight, the #pawsandpagesbookclub will be discussing Come From Away with our guest, author Genevieve Graham 🇨🇦 and I'm really looking forward to it.

🏞 I’ve read all of Graham's books. So what's a girl to do while waiting for the release of On Isabella Street on April 22, but start re-reading.😁 I'm really glad I decided to re-read this book, and if it's possible, I enjoyed it even more the second time. I think knowing the plot gave me a chance to appreciate some of the finer details of 1940's maritime life and when I read a Genevieve Graham book, the inevitable incredible history lesson.

🪖I always think of the events of WWII as having taken place half a world away in Europe. A sad and devastating war that changed the world certainly, but a tragedy removed from my own country's history. That emeny U-Boats lurked off the coast of Nova Scotia and trawled the waters of the St. Lawrence was such a surprising fact. Incredibly, I had to wait till long after my school days to learn of it, as well, the tragedy of the passenger ferry SS Caribou. Canada did its part in sending our fathers and sons as Navy and Army and our sisters and aunts as nurses. Also, as pilots and code breakers, I learned The Secret Keeper, also by Graham. I just had no idea that the fingers of WWII were that far-reaching as to have ever touched our shores.

🍁 From WWI, WWII, the Halifax explosion, the gold rush, The Acadian Expulsion, spies, the British Home Children sceme😢 and prohibition, Graham's books offer a glimpse into the Canadian past and how it has shaped the great nation we are today.

📚 I believe all of Genevieve Graham's books should be required reading for Canadians, and I recommend these books to all my read around the world friends too!
