My long-haul flight tips after almost 20 years of travelling for work.

Long-haul flights are exhausting, but a few simple habits can make them much more manageable. Here are the things I focus on whenever I’m travelling long distances. I’m from Australia so most things are a long way away!

💧 HYDRATION
• Aim to drink water regularly throughout the flight. Around 250ml (8oz) per hour is a useful reminder, adjusting to your own needs.
• Bring a reusable water bottle and Include electrolytes .

😴 SLEEP & REST
• Try to sleep in line with the time zone at your destination.
• Bring an eye mask and earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones.
• Sleep when you can rather than waiting for the perfect moment.
• Even resting quietly is better than putting pressure on yourself to fall asleep.

⏳ BREAK THE FLIGHT INTO CHUNKS
• Don’t focus on how many hours you have left.
• Break the flight into smaller blocks: a meal, a movie, some reading, a sleep, then the final stretch.
• Having something planned for each block can make the time feel much more manageable.

🎧 MANAGE YOUR TECH
• Never rely entirely on the in-flight entertainment system. Download movies, shows, podcasts and playlists before you leave. Bring a book or e-reader as another option.
• Make sure your devices are charged before boarding.
* Consider a Bluetooth connector for your headphones - no more glasses vs headphones!

🧥 STAY WARM
• Always pack a warm layer (a shawl or pashmina is great for this), even if you’re travelling somewhere hot.
• Bring socks and comfortable layers.

🧼 YOUR PERSONAL SPACE
• Wipe down your tray table, armrests and other frequently touched surfaces where practical.
• Carry hand sanitiser and use it when appropriate, especially before eating.
• Cleaning procedures vary between flights, so a quick wipe-down is sensible.

🚶‍♀️ KEEP MOVING
• Move your feet and ankles regularly while seated.
• Change position throughout the flight.
• Get up and walk around when it’s safe to do so.

Save this for your next long-haul flight! ✈️

20 years of work travel taught me how to sleep on an overnight flight in economy. ✈️ Here’s what actually works (it won’t feel like business class, but it helps):

1. Don’t assume anything - don’t assume you will get a warm blanket, you will like the food. Assume you will get nothing and then everything is a nice surprise.
2. Sleep mask - you need a complete black out mask. Those lights go off for only a few hours even on a 10 hour flight. You want to maximise your sleep, block out all the light.
3. Earplugs - a kid will be overtired, old mate two seats over will be watching a movie on their iPad without headphones, a few red wines later and a chatty Cathy is louder than the pilot announcements.
4. Layers - the blankets are barely a teatowel, bring a light jumper and another layer if you run cold, a pashmina is good for extra warmth.
5. Neck support - a supportive neck pillow helps you stay relatively upright (and somewhat comfortable) for some actual sleep.
6. Avoid screens - I know it can be really hard to avoid catching a movie or some game time, reading on my kobo is usually my best option for this.
7. Compression socks. Falling asleep and not moving can happen, so help yourself stay healthy by wearing compression socks for the flight.
8. Hydrate - as much as you can, even a small amount of dehydration makes jet lag much worse. Take an empty water bottle through security, even a small one if you are tight on space.

Then my bougie list to really take it up a notch!

1. Heated eye masks. I use @lulaeyepatches They really relax your eyes to ease into sleep.
2. Under eye patches. So you don’t feel like death when you deboard, throw some hydrating and brightening eye patches on!
3. Eat before you board. If you can have dinner before you board, will allow you to get some extra sleep time.
4. Snacks. I try to pack some snacks so if you are hungry there is no waiting for meal service.

Save this for your next red-eye, and send it to the friend who always arrives wrecked.

I’m obsessed with @theweekender.aus they’re an Aussie business and they gifted me this toiletry bag.

I thought it would be great to try but honestly it’s one of those brands where you want to buy it for everyone you know.

It would be a great secret Santa gift because aren’t we all sick of gift cards?

Plus they have adorable colours and a really cool new product coming out soon!

You bet it can fit!!! This tiny bag can hold a lot, and it’s so light!

Stop motion needs a little (Or a lot) or work, that’s for sure.
