Kia ora koutou katoa,
Areez Katki here — good evening. How pleased to be posting this week, as the next Blumhardt Foundation artist.

I’ve been living in Pōneke over this period of lockdown — working on a handful of new projects & upcoming exhibitions, simultaneously crafting my Masters manuscript with the International Institute of Modern Letters, at Wellington’s Victoria University.

One of my current pieces of writing has taken form by initially addressing a certain sense of material longing; often missing my knitting needles & stash of fibers [from which I’m currently annexed]. I particularly miss the warmth of wool, the ways by which it aids us in keeping our hands & our minds occupied.

So on that note, I thought I’d commence by sharing this wee image of myself wearing a rather memorable garment: the swan jumper my mother & I hand knitted in 2007, for a particularly Björk themed Halloween.

A subject that I’ve been quite interested in exploring, is how such intergenerational conversations may be found [and retained] upon the surfaces of garments & textiles.

Considering how craft sensibilities have nurtured & protected us, educated us — probably directed us unwittingly, to some rather wonderful places.
