POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Been trying to use whatever platform I have to converse about what's really important. I have far less of a following here on my personal account, and in fast-moving and violent times, we try to keep our heads above the algorithm's rising waterline, so I' e been posting on main. But it occurs to me that I could afford to speak a little more clearly. Please share if it is resonant or meaningful to you:

There is a very real chance that my activity as a person inclined to speak on world matters will end any chance I have at the career and life I have spent all of my professional life working toward.

I'm not yet clear on how I feel about that. What I do know is that there's no world in which I pretend that this shit is normal. Acceptable. Tolerable.

My Jewish friends are screaming for their names to be taken out of warmongers' mouths. They're watching a rerun of their family history of gen0cide be visited on those with whom they share ancestry and values, and as the opening credits roll, the horror that somebody put their names down as Executive Producers. This ethn1c cleans1ng to which they DID NOT CONSENT. My Arab friends are in agony and begging to be seen as human, and finding that the audience of this movie does not identify with them - or their dismembered children.

Yet we are employed to tell the stories of outgunned rebels fighting for survival, and for the right to self-determination. We love Rob Roy, and Star Wars, and Saving Private Ryan. How can we still not see ourselves in a civilian population being terr0rized?

I don't know what the path for me looks like long-term. For the first time in my life, I can't see it. I don't know what the future holds for this conflict, for others' opinions of me, for their value assessment on my participation in this time in history.

What I do know is that I have been eminently clear since my career first started that I was unwilling to participate in oppressive shit. That I will not co-sign predation, subjugation, bigotry, or erasure.

It's not up to me to decide how others feel about that, or me. While it may affect my livelihood, it's none of my business.

No more dead kids.

BROTHER, I CRY is the feature directorial debut of writer/director Jessie Anthony. Not only is this her first feature, but it was selected to screen at VIFF both virtually and in-theatre (tonight). We have only been working with Jessie for a short time, but have seen her talent shine on the screen, in the interviews we’ve coordinated for her and we know she’s absolutely a star to watch. Jessie just won the BC Emerging Filmmaker Award at VIFF and it’s no surprise to us. ⠀

"Pain, insecurities, trauma, doubt…" Jon (Justin Rain), a young First Nations man, is struggling to overcome addiction. But he has several strong women in his corner: his girlfriend, his sister, his mother, and his unborn daughter, they are all hoping he can master his demons and find peace. Made under Telefilm’s Talent to Watch program, the debut feature from Capilano graduate Jessie Anthony is a social realist drama edged with dark dreams and visions. - @viff⠀
