Good to be out in public, standing on travertine surrounded by art again. Kenneth Noland “Another Choice” (1976) and in the foreground, “Non-Geometric Form ( splotch)” (1990) by Sol LeWitt. Meanwhile, Dr Brandt admires a Gerhard Richter. #agnsw #kennethnoland#sollewitt#modernart#gerhardrichter #modernpainting#abstractart

From the Columbus Dispatch: “On this day in 1978, Ohio was paralyzed by " the blizzard of the century." Fifty-one people died as a result of the weather. Snowfall ranged from 5 inches in Columbus to more than 20 inches in northern Ohio. Hurricane-force winds reached 69 mph locally, creating huge drifts and plunging the wind-chill far below zero.” These photos are from our home in Sylvania, with my cousins visiting. I remember dad stayed home from work that week (which was unheard of) and he did a really tough Star Wars puzzle of a ship, maybe an X-wing?

"The thing you didn't plan is always the best thing," explains photographer and musician Steve Hiett in a video interview from 2012. Growing up in 1940s England, Hiett couldn't have planned what's happened since. He's had a remarkable career in fashion photography, plus a cult following and posthumous revival as a musician — with his only release during his lifetime now selling for several hundred dollars, recently re-released by Efficient Space / Be Records.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since the turn of the century, the full range of Steve Hiett's work has gained newfound appreciation, first with his photographs being featured in nearly a dozen exhibitions worldwide (including several solo retrospectives), as well as his graphic design, most notably in a 2012 exhibition of his work for Vidal Sassoon. His music, to today's ears, sounds strikingly prescient, with its understated combination of ambient, American primitivism, both sparsely Balearic and folky.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On 28 August 2019, Steve Hiett passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife Louise; sadly, this was mere weeks before the re-release of his music on vinyl. His last Instagram post is from several months earlier: a view from his hospital bed. Steve left behind a career marked by spontaneity across varied creative endeavours, all of which are spectacularly fully realised and unique.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When he said that the thing you didn't plan is always the best thing, it could apply to his off the cuff photos, or his accidental music career 40 years later. "Y'know, you just kind of make it up as you're going along and hope for the best," was his simple explanation. "Beautiful mistakes are what you're searching for."

This week we would like to recognise all our wonderful, generous volunteers who give up their precious time to help Studio A. Just like our friend Wilfred here. Without your support, in all its varied forms, it would be impossible for us to do what we do. So THANK YOU! We are so grateful. May the great art continue thanks to you all!❤️👏🥰
