Yesterday on Clark Hill Lake. 🩷

I was so proud of Jeni. I can only imagine what it took to step onto Bill’s boat, knowing all the memories it holds.

With Cooper and Carsen leading the way in their boat, David, Jeni, and I headed out on the lake. Before long, there were smiles, laughter, and a little bit of that familiar feeling of being together on the water again.

Grief brings so many “firsts” you never asked for. Sometimes the only way through them is simply to do them. To face the moment, let it be whatever it is, and realize that you can still smile on the other side of it, and sometimes even through it.

We can miss someone terribly and still have a good day. We can laugh, enjoy the sunshine, be with family, and make new memories. None of that means we are leaving them behind. It is part of learning how to keep living while carrying their love with us.

And seeing Jeni driving Bill’s boat with David beside her and a smile on her face, I could not help but think Bill had to be smiling down, too. 😇

I am a little behind sharing this, more medical appointments and getting ready for the book launch have kept me busy last week, but I did not want to let last weekend’s trip go without a proper send off.

Saturday was our last full day in the mountains, and it turned into exactly the kind of day you want a trip to end on, unhurried and full of the people we love. After the early start to go fishing the morning before, we let ourselves sleep in and ease into the day slowly. We made it into Clayton for a little shopping, and true to form, David could not pass an outdoors store without stopping in. From there we headed back to the campground and let the afternoon slow all the way down. By evening, David had a fire going, one he’d planned for since we skipped joining everyone for dinner that night. His family stopped by afterward, and we ended up right where we spent most of this trip, gathered around a fire, surrounded by family.

Sunday morning it was time to pack it all up. Folding chairs, tucking away the awnings, breaking down everything that made this spot feel like home for the weekend. One last look at River Vista Mountain Village before pulling out, mountains behind us, a great long weekend behind us too.

This trip taught us a lot, how to set up camp, how to slow down, and mostly, that we picked another fun way to spend our time together. A great first trip.
