What the f*ck is a producer?

To be frank, I still don’t know myself.

Googling where to find a double-decker bus at 8am doesn’t typically fall under most job responsibilities. Or even finding a bus stop, since a bus needs a bus stop to accompany the bus… right? Then arranging transportation for said bus stop to the shoot location all before getting in my morning dose of Kaytra.

Put simply, the first thing I tell people when asked what I do, is that I do everything. I’m a problem solver. I control all the moving and shifting parts of a set and crew, complete budget breakdowns (giving myself too much credit here), negotiate location and crew hire, as well as taking photos of @thingsifindpretty. These intricacies help to bring about the ecosystem needed to realise the creative vision of a project.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, the photos.

In an ideal world, production and directors act as two limbs working together in tandem like an astute boxer. Rosy. But in reality I’m more like an overprotective parent, balancing direction with feasibility, swapping out lollipops for carrot sticks.

Truthfully, I had no intention of producing. If you’re looking for someone to blame, blame @oniqur. Whilst on a walk back to his office, he suggested I assist on production for @pinkpantheress - ‘Just For Me’. My first look into this immersive world of prop gathering and VHS camcorders to recreate this 2000’s UK garage, Craig David-esque video, which I appreciated.

To me, each project’s like a new forearm tattoo, positing its own unique style. And I'm still filling up my sleeve. For instance, production behind @ashbeckbaby’ - ‘TUFF’ was oddly structured, working within an established team, but also calling for improvisation to source last minute locations and wrap up cash-in-hand deals. Whereas @dexterinthenewsagent - ‘Play Pretend’ was vastly different. She’s family, and so I had license to play around with more creative freedom. My favourite video ever!

But funnily enough, having said all of this, I still couldn’t tell you what the fuck a producer is.

But I will find out for you guys. Wish me luck.
