Year 5 Monologue; “Lawd, give this Black Shepard, PEACE!” PEACE We pray for this daily as we work towards our excellence in serving people hella good coffee! This month makes 5 years of service! 5 years of intentional work! 5 years of being stoic, carrying integrity and cutting our teeth on coffee! Thank You for the continued support and love you have shared with us over these years! Both KCK and Independence have been such incredible places for us to start, learn and share our coffee with! Sure this year has been hard as a business and hard personally for me as the owner BUT I still love what we do! There’s nothing short of gratitude for the support and love we have received this year! A lot of times it was just at the right moment when we needed that act of kindness or a generous compliment. We are super thankful we get to serve such amazing customers everyday and we can’t wait to do this another 5 years, wherever it takes us! This monologue is raw and real but it’s our truth and it’s something we take pride in sharing transparently that this path is not for the weak! We hope you enjoy some great moments from last year! Thank You!

The new Marlon James novel, this much older John Steinbeck novel, and both volumes of the indigenous horror collection 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 have been hard to get copies of this month and harder to keep in stock, but we’ve got several of all of em for ya! Even better, tonight is the final @third_friday_artwalk of the year, and the weather is perfect for a slightly spooky evening on 6th Street here in Strawberry Hill. Come get some great food, hang out with your friends and neighbors, enter the costume contest at @epicartskc , buy art and crafts from local makers, and enjoy live music and performances. Don’t forget to stop in at Flagship to see fantastic paintings by Raymond Olais, and draw your favorite cryptid on our interactive mural. See you tonight!

For the final Third Friday Art Walk of 2026, Flagship is thrilled to be showing artwork by Raymond Olais. In addition to having his paintings and drawings on display, we’ll also have a brand new cryptid-themed mural created by the folks from our weekly Open Craft Night that you can help color in, and as usual 6th Street will be full of food vendors, crafters, interactive art stations, and live performances. There’s even a costume contest with cash prizes! It’s this Friday evening from 5-9pm in KCK, hope to see you there! Raymond Olais, North Newton, KS, retired in 2018 after teaching for 25 years at Newton High School in Newton, Kansas. He first came to Kansas in 1978 after meeting his wife, Patrice, while both were art students at the San Francisco Art Institute. He grew up in East Orosi, a barrio in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley that was the hotbed of the United Farmworkers Movement in the 60s and 70s. He is also an alum of Colegio de la Tierra, a unique farmworker’s college founded and guided by the principles of the United Farm Workers. His artwork contains Mesoamerican imagery and icons of the Chicano art movements, and was heavily influenced by leading Chicano art professors who were the founders of the RCAF, Royal Chicano Art Front. In addition, Raymond creates sci-fi artworks and sculptures in remembrance of growing up during the space race era of the 50s and 60s, and he meshes the two styles together as homage to both.
