Chapter book donations for 3rd & 4th graders 📚✨

Last week, we dropped off a box of books to a Spanish immersion classroom at a local Title I school so they can start dropping everything to read!! Shoutout to Ms Imperatori for giving us free rein to choose the books. Of course, we had to pick some of our favorites & even donated a few copies in both English & Spanish.

Just after we left, students were already dropping everything to read! Thanks to your continued support—engaging on our posts, sharing what we’re doing, & showing us love—we’re able to make donations like this one to classrooms across rural North Carolina that are looking to improve their literacy scores & create a lifelong love of reading!! 📖💖

Although I spend all year reading work by Latinx and Hispanic authors, these are the ones I read during the month! I wish I could choose a TBR and stick to it but the mood dictates the next read! Also, to those who participated in the Raíces y Relatos challenge, I hope you had some great reads!

Thank you to so many creators for being the reason why my TBR continues to grow! May everyone continue reading and supporting Latinx/Hispanic writers! If there is one thing I always get reminded of is that we have many stories to tell!

📖 Book Review 📖
Absent by Rex Ogle

This story follows three middle school students who each skip classes for different reasons. Calvin is skipping because he has to drop his younger siblings off at school and just can’t make it to first period on time. Liam is skipping because he’s being bullied by another student, and having to see them everyday in class is just too much. Manny is skipping because he hates being told what to do and just can’t see the point in going to school if no one believes in him. Since they’ve all been caught skipping class they all find themselves in detention where they form an unlikely friendship.

I listened to the audiobook version of this and missed out on the mixed media format, but I loved the multiple points of view. Each of the boys had a different perspective and reason for missing school, and their chapters clearly depicted their individual personalities. Absenteeism from school feels like it is higher than ever, but it’s important to learn the reasons why students don’t want to, or are unable to attend class. Family obligations, bullying, not feeling like the classroom is for them really highlight the importance of a positive classroom culture. I found the teachers in this story entertaining with the librarian clearly being my favourite. I will definitely be grabbing a physical copy of this book for my students immediately.

Thank you to @librofm and @recordedbooks for a copy of this audiobook, and shout out to @kittoreads for posting about this book and reminding me to push this one to the top of my TBR list!

New book by @thirdrex my 12 year old is reading now.

Absent is about 3 boys who skip school, each for different reasons. When the boys are thrown together in detention, they realize how much they can learn from their teachers and each other.

Mixed-format middle grade novel, reading age 10-14 as recommended by the publisher.

My 12 year old selected this book to purchase while on vacation and visiting indie bookstore @elmstreetbooks

This is my second novel by Rex Ogle, and once again, he did not disappoint! I had a feeling from the very beginning that I knew how this story would unfold, but Ogle’s writing made me hope for a different outcome anyway. And that, to me, is the beauty of his storytelling.

We meet Benny and Lawson, two best friends who are practically inseparable. Their friendship is built on a shared understanding of what it means to grow up without a father figure, and they become brothers in the ways that matter most. Despite their difficult living and economic situations, both boys dream of something better. Benny takes the academic route, determined to be a good son and work toward college, while Lawson chooses a different path, believing he isn't as smart and feeling the pressure to make ends meet. Their circumstances lead them toward very different choices, with consequences that neither can fully escape.

But this story is about so much more than socioeconomic struggles and the realities of the world these boys navigate. At its heart, it is a story about friendship, brotherhood, and the family we find along the way. Family isn't always defined by blood. Sometimes, the people who grow up beside us become the ones who know us best and stand by us when life gets difficult.

This book also reminded me how grateful I am for the childhood friendships I've carried into adulthood. There is something incredibly special about knowing that, when push comes to shove, the people who have been part of your life for years will still show up for you. Ogle's story is a reminder that these bonds are real, powerful, and worth holding on to.

Rex Ogle's writing is raw, transparent, and real. He doesn't shy away from difficult circumstances, and his storytelling leaves you thinking about the choices people make and the situations that shape them.

His work might not be for everyone, but I genuinely appreciate his ability to tell stories that feel honest and human.

Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved everything about this book! @thirdrex demonstrated all of his talents in this one book: writing, illustrating, poetic nature, and deep content! Book follows three seemingly completely opposite boys who end up in detention together. Fantastically woven MG realistic fiction written in partial graphic novel & verse form. Highly rec! 📚❤️
