This past week I had the honor of presenting my brother and fellow San Diego native @nickcannon with my office’s Key to the Movement the highest honor established by the Office of the San Diego Public Advocate to recognize individuals who have advanced social justice and humanitarian excellence in the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Long before the world knew Nick as an entertainer and entrepreneur, San Diego was home. And even as his platform grew, he continued pouring into young people here and across California from creating opportunities around youth entrepreneurship and career development in San Diego schools, to standing alongside families and advocates in Sacramento fighting for police accountability and justice after the killing of Stephon Clark, to consistently using his voice around gun violence, criminal justice reform and opportunity for underserved communities.

I’ve been blessed to work beside Nick in some of that work over the years not just in San Diego but across California and the nation. He’s been like a brother to me — someone whose independence, courage and determination to build his own lane have always inspired me to do the same.

That’s why Nick Cannon is exactly what the Key to the Movement represents.

It’s not about celebrity. It’s about what you do with the platform you’ve been given, who you fight for, who you lift up and what doors you leave open behind you.

From San Diego to the world, congratulations, big bro. Keep moving the movement forward. 🔑✊🏾

The Key to the Movement is more than an honor it is a recognition of a commitment to move humanity forward. 🔑

Established by the Office of the San Diego Public Advocate, the Key to the Movement recognizes individuals who have advanced social justice and humanitarian excellence in the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

San Diego Public Advocate @shaneharrisnow recently stopped by @thirdspacesd and presented the Key to San Diego native and global entertainment icon @nickcannon , recognizing his years of advocacy, youth empowerment, community engagement and commitment to using his platform to create opportunities for others.

The Key represents a simple principle: true influence is measured not only by the doors you walk through, but by the doors you open for those coming behind you.

Congratulations, Nick Cannon. 🔑

🎥 @cbs8

The movement continues.

are you a poet/poetry lover looking for in-person community in san diego, but find it overwhelming how miraculously blessed this city is to have so many? WE GOTCHU!

📍the poetry mic directory 🎤
https://tinyurl.com/PoetryMicDirectory

please use responsibly ❤️‍🔥

❓why/who/where did this come from?
hi. olivia here 👋 i’m a ‘list person’ who believes in the power of accessibility. when i moved here in 2018, i started my own personal list of poetry-friendly open mics. 8 years later, i have accumulated a lot of data, contacts, & the honor of running an open mic myself (the very first one i ever attended 🥹). my favorite part of this community is getting to welcome new people into it, so i built a public directory in effort to make creative human connection easier for all. please let me know if you see an error, a missing event, or have any questions.

thank you for putting poetry & community in this world. the only way we survive is together. please take care of each other. 🖤

Today a San Diego son @nickcannon received my office’s “Key to the Movement” recognizing a legacy of using his platform to open doors, uplift communities and move generations forward.

I was proud to present my brother with my office’s Key to the Movement, recognizing his years of using his platform to advance social justice, combat gun violence, empower young people and create opportunities in underserved communities.

I’ve witnessed that commitment firsthand through nearly a decade of shared work. I’ve always admired Nick’s independence and his unapologetic belief that we don’t have to wait for someone else to create a lane for us — we can build, own and define our own pathway.

Today, two true San Diegans came together around one belief: your platform means more when you use it to open doors for others.

The “Key to the Movement” established by me and my office represents the highest honor of my office, recognizing those who use their influence not simply to walk through doors, but to open them for others and move generations forward.

Congratulations, Nick. Keep opening doors. The movement continues.

Date nights in San Diego > We started with drinks at home, danced at @thirdspacevenue event with @bojakmusic (if you haven’t been to one yet, go), and ended with lemon drop martinis and games at @moxysandiego downtown. Where’s your favorite date night spot in SD?
