Congratulations to Mr. Ben Forbes, the 2026 recipient of the Forest F. Martin Memorial Award, presented by the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association for excellence in journalism education.

Since 2007, Ben has led [cdstv], Corona del Sol’s award-winning film and TV program, inspiring student storytellers and building one of the state’s premier media programs. Alongside his students, he has earned numerous local, state, and regional honors over the years, including Rocky Mountain Emmys.

A well-deserved recognition for an educator whose impact continues to shape the next generation of journalists and filmmakers!

10 years ago quite a few things happened. I uploaded my first film ever with the genius and talent of @natgcyo by my side. I had decided around this time I not only wanted to go to college but I wanted to pursue film. And in the midst of this I was a producer in CDSTV, a time that shaped me so much more than my 17 year old self could comprehend. To celebrate, some favorites of mine from "the vault" if you will haha.

Rubik's Cube was never supposed to be a film originally. At the time of writing it I never meant to share it, it was something I wrote for myself. In my 2nd year in CDSTV as a producer I pondered if I should go in front of the camera to do something a little differently than my peers. Also around this time Natalie and I had literally just met. And I do mean literally. We hung out only a few times with mutual friends, and I had decided to share the "script" with her. And the rest was history. Truly the first time we spent time alone with one another was filming Rubik's Cube in a green belt by my house. We laughed, we cried (lol), but we trusted each other in creating our art together. Which thankfully is something we've had lots of practice with thankfully in 10 years of friendship.

Rubik's Cube was inspired by my experience with depression and getting diagnosed with PTSD. When translating it to the language of film if you will I wanted to portray a message I thought was really important for myself and anyone who needed to hear it. Life is confusing, messy, and frustrating to say the least. But it's important to keep going and remember you can figure it all out even if it doesn't feel like you can. Which I can tell you at 27 that's certainly a message I've needed, and still need. I have to remind myself that all the time, even now. What a blessing to have this film, my darling Natalie, so many film experiences since then. And more to come...sooner than you think. ;)

For now happy ten years of friendship my beloved Nat, happy birthday to our first child lmao. And a reminder especially right now to support movie theaters, indie filmmakers, etc. 10 years ago I couldn't imagine even being in film school. Today I have straight A's in my first semester

what a wonderful thing it is to discover your passions in life while you’re young and surrounded by those you love. in this past year, i have been putting my entire soul into my craft, polishing my talents, putting every free hour into working for my future, braving college applications and acceptances (and some pretty devastating deferrals) and all around doing damn hard work. this film, however, has been the most fun, exciting, and thrilling piece of art that i have had the luxury of being able to put my name on.

words cannot describe how incredibly grateful i am to have this amazing of a cast and crew. they showed me what real work is, what real workers do, and how real work is done. they put in countless hours from way too long school nights (that might have gotten us in trouble) to putting up with me in my first time directing a short film. they gave me an experience that i will remember for the rest of my life, and that i will think fondly of anytime i think of my high school adventures. to you all, my wonderful crew jak, jackson, nicole, and mj, and my cast audra, tristen, and day’vion, thank you.

to jak and jackson specifically, i dont know if you quite understand how much i idolized you last year before i really knew you as my friends. i am so especially honored and grateful that you gave me the experience of directing this short film for .wav, and i hope i have made you both proud.

to my family and friends who showed up and supported us tonight and throughout filming, i am eternally grateful for you all as well, and i am filled with so much joy that i was able to share this moment with you all.

to my fellow filmmakers who participated in this contest with us (and especially to our incredibly talented corona team) i am so proud to share the stage with such talented students. this contest had me worried, with each team showing up in the most unique and exciting ways possible. you all will go so far in your pursuits.

thank you all again, so so much, this means the world to me.
