POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Found this little fella this morning floating face down in the tray I use for bottom watering. Last night I’d been sorting books and @flyingleaps_2016 booklets were on the floor, a serendipitous opportunity for a little art and design, like and share so the blue tit didn’t die in vain. A cynical masterstroke in advertising, or a rough and ready piece of opportunistic creativity.

When two worlds collide, gardening and bill posting, the transient nature of life meets the transient nature of unsanctioned billposting.

I don't have kids, but if I did, and they wandered off in a busy museum or park, Olivia is someone you'd hoped they'd reach out to. She's in every way a delight, she makes working on jobs with her a constant pleasure and never have to worry about anything beyond my immediate task because she's always on it. Let's have it for Olivia

|FLYING INTO PRINT ACTION|
What a weekend smashing a classic @jealous_london live printing two day session at |The Art Of Flying| with @uncle_insta - so many chats with new people (mainly about what the @martin.rowson1 reimagining of the 1968 Paris Riot designed print meant), catching up with classic legends, learning about the history of fly posting and lots of bloody joyous printing!

Big thanks as always to @thisbedistoosmall and @subvertiser for making us feel at home, @moth.into.the.light , @katybednarz , @m.a.r.studio for helping me out and to everyone who came to pull a print, paste it on the wall and made the weekend bloody fun!

As I prepare to start taking everything down, I’d like to thank everyone involved for making the last two weeks so memorable and poignant.

@subvertiser @thisbedistoosmall @buildhollywood installed the most amazing large prints seamlessly and beautifully.

@hromada_collective’s performances continue to resonate and sit with people long after the air has fallen silent.

@polystave @nikakrik @lubiyroman, whose films screened inside the space created, had such a powerful impact, reminding us why these types of coming together and collaboration are so important.

@vpslab @liubiprykrasy.irpin @v.lyubiy @pliers for the craft and inspiration.

@ariamark for sharing his work and experiences

@greatorexstreet_e1 for the support and care when making things happen.

@pastmary @apollopolle for inspiration and assistance in doing the thing I can't.

All of @hromada_collective (again) for the love, support, and inspiration.

Everyone who came to the exhibition and engaged with the work.

Most of all thank to the Beloved family.

See you all soon.

I saw my first adtakeover back in the early 90’s, it was probably in an early issue of Kalle Lasn’s Adbuster Magazine. The magazines anti-consumerist campaigns struck a chord, their methods even more so, a direct descendent of The Situationists critique of Capitalism in “Society of the Spectacle”, Black Mask, UATEM and the UK’s King Mob, all of who attempted to disrupt or subvert media culture and mainstream cultural institutions whilst exposing their methods of domination. The merry prankster “culture jammers” of the 90’s slowly morphed in to what we now consider as “Street Art” both having roots deep into creative transgressive acts we trace back to medieval times. Culture Jamming is to Street Art what graffiti is to today’s neo-muralism.

Having had numerous run ins with Clear Channel and JC Decaux about illegal takeovers of their billboards and illuminated bus shelters (with the aid of @jordanseiler ), and tiring of how quickly they swapped them out during the festival period, it struck me we needed a change of plan. They say if you can’t beat them, join them, so I did. With the aid of a friend and a flatbed truck, instead of going over their billboards, we simply dismantled and took them.

A property owner on a main road had been asking about a mural on his front wall, I gave him a quick call, he was away but said fine. Should have probably informed him they were billboards and not a mural.

Anyway, this was my first piece, a riff on Banksy’s “The Joy of not being sold anything” billboard I guess. On a sidenote, a few months later JC Decaux went over them with two massive ads for Burger King, I gave them a call in mock outrage and within 24 hours they’d been out and changed them back to white. Result.

It struck me that these were great sites to “curate” for artists, far more eyes on them than any gallery or museum, sadly the city council rejected the idea. Presumably because they never give up an ounce of power or space without an exchange. The Burger King Status Quo, less risky than allowing artists to participate in shaping public art and culture. But it’s a great idea, and I’d urge any of you to approach your councils and propose something similar.

UP THE BLUES

I glance at the clock, it’s 08.39, time for breakfast. I pick up Angela Davis's autobiography and a slim volume of poetry from spoken word artist Desree, fitting companions for today's reclamation of a small piece of my own history and grief.

Down and out for a pre-breakfast smoke, this time I walk around the outside of the building and in through the café area’s main doors. Roy Orbison’s “Only the lonely” fills the room, ironic considering the current period of “no contact” I’m in, but that’s another story, healing from healing. Maybe this hotel stay is giving me the blues. I guess Roy Orbison’s rendition of “Blue Bayou” would have been asking too much, it could have been I guess, but then this would have been fiction, and blue remember, is the truth.

There goes my baby
There goes my heart
They're gone forever
So far apart…

“Table for one sir?”, he has a mouth that tells lies.

I make a face between a grimace and a smile. I ease past him and head to a table by the window. I’m going to smoke I think to myself, Hayward Gallery later.

STREET ART DIARIES PT 1
London April 19, 2025
Link in Bio

In London for Easter Weekend with family and for various meetings, catching up with the extended Nuart family and to attend our good friend @hannah_judah s book launch courtesy of friends and partners at Buildhollywood.

Whilst there, through the haze of social anxiety and the smoke from my Marlboro Gold’s, I took to writing, reflecting on my mental state, surroundings and the street cultures I work with, forging links and connections in real time, in physical space, a hundred browser windows open simultaneously. This is the first paragraph of a longer essay now published amongst others on Medium. Link in bio for the rest.

LOVE IS THE RUNNING TOWARDS.

I wake for the second time, or is it the third. They’ve moved the entrance to the breakfast area, anxiety. I go back up one floor, I decide I need a smoke, or a smoke decides it needs me, I go back down and out the revolving doors, I can’t stand still, I walk with fake purpose, back and forth, raised voices, I avoid, casually turn back, anxiety. Pink stripped paper candy bag on the floor, pick it up or kick it, I kick it. Back through the revolving door. Up the escalator, bright lights, big city. Anxiety. I walk the long route through the bar, croissants on the floor, down the stairs, no one is waiting to take my room number. Stand or go in and find my own table, I’ve rehearsed this, I need a window table by the doors, I’m going to smoke. I’m going to be smoking, could I have a seat by the window please. No one comes, I’m looking at the guests, the guests are looking at me, anxiety. Fuck it, I walk in and chose my own table, by the doors, by the window, I am going to smoke.

The sweep of the ceiling is like a highway, it leads me straight out through the doors, but should I try the doors beside me, what if they’re locked, should I pick up my phone and pretend I’m taking a call? Anxiety. I’m writing and thinking, waiting for the waitress to return with the breakfast menu, I wait too long. I go for a smoke at the front entrance, long rizla on the floor, memories of the night before. PANIK, ZONK, H, SUSIE, then across the street. LOVE IS THE RUNNING TOWARDS.
