Nearly a year ago in Marfa, celebrating the re-opening of Donald Judd’s Architecture Office with @juddfoundation after a seven year restoration led by @schaumarchitects @troyschaum.

Its hard to believe what they say about the landscape in West Texas until you see it for the first time, in my case Ieaving the extractive dust of Midland (grids of oil derricks viewed from the sky, an airport full of PJs) and driving the open road west until the land unfurls and doubles around you, through what seems like multiple microclimates and ecosystems, ending in an impossibly inky starry sky. I developed a bad habit of filming while driving, chasing sunsets while attempting to somehow record a heretofore unknown vastness (not recordable, or knowable, without first making yourself very small).

The work on the Architecture Office incorporated quiet adaptations to the energy consumption and material configuration of the 1907 building, including passive cooling and rooftop solar. We recently shared the exciting announcement that Troy and team will also lead @chinatifoundation ’s restoration of Donald Judd’s Artillery Sheds, commencing soon. Thank you to Troy and Schaum Architects for having us along for this ride ✨

A great evening at l.a. Eyeworks’ Fairfax flagship for the Campus Tour and Talk with Brent Zerger of l.a. Eyeworks, Escher GuneWardena Architecture and the L.A. Forum.

Brent, Frank and Ravi discussed the rich history of l.a. Eyeworks and the design process behind its iconic silver foam interior, drawing inspiration from Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory in New York.

Blanking -Book Talk with Troy Schaum & Tei Carpenter
Wednesday Sep 16 at Head Hi 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Blanking, a book on the work and vision of the architecture firm Schaum/Shieh.

Troy Schaum @troyschaum Principal of Schaum Architects and Professor at @ricearch in conversation with Tei Carpenter @teicarpenter founder and director of Agency-Agency and Assistant Professor at @princetonarchitecture

Troy will reflect on the effort and thought that went into making this book, as well as on his next chapter as Schaum Architects, an award-winning architectural firm based in Houston, Texas.

This new publication published by @park_books invites readers into the working studio, a real and conceptual space where they work on recurring themes: operating within the city at the scale of building (urbanism); the interrelation of materiality, units of form, and building products (tectonics); and ways to collaborate with the life of a building in its context (preservation), among others.

For the past decade, @PublicArtCompany, led by @Raffileh, has curated the prolific @Coachella Art Program that welcomes large-scale installations to the desert every year.

This year, we experienced three new installations that each explore form, light, and movement.

“Visage Brut” by @the_ladg, a soaring steel structure that treats architectural elements as existing on a spectrum

“Starry Eyes” by @ar__k__c, a field of cactus-like forms that offer shade by day and glow as lanterns by night, turning the desert into a shared spatial experience

“Maze” by @sabine_marcelis, a glowing, winding structure that invites movement while creating moments of pause

Following a seven-year restoration and rebuilding led by Schaum Architects, Judd Foundation reopened Donald Judd’s Architecture Office to the public on September 20, 2025. The Architecture Office is the first major building project to be completed in Judd Foundation’s long-term restoration plan for its buildings in Texas.

This rebuilding effort incorporates adaptions to the energy consumption and material configuration of the building—including passive cooling, and rooftop solar—to improve overall energy performance. The $3.3 million restoration and reconstruction builds upon Judd’s own efforts to return the structure to its original condition following his purchase of it in 1990. The undertaking reflects the core principles of the team’s mission to maintain and preserve Judd’s buildings and demonstrates Judd’s approach of thoughtful preservation, carefully orchestrated craftsmanship, and local collaboration.

Thanks to Rue Magazine for their lovely feature of our Silver Lake project for @blakeberris and his family. This project was a labor of love with a challenging site and an existing building that was all potential, reimagined into a fantastic and joyful space. @ruemagazine available at newsstands today!
