Can you believe the Edmonton Fringe is already here?

This year, Puccini’s La rondine (The Swallow) takes the stage—featuring a number of Edmonton Opera alumni with Good Mess Opera Theatre.

Magda, a Parisian courtesan, dreams of true love beyond her high-society life. When a poet predicts she will “fly south” in search of happiness, a chance meeting with a young stranger sets her on a daring path—trading her identity for a shop girl’s disguise and following him into a whirlwind romance. But in the sunlit south of France, her past threatens to shatter their bliss.

Don’t miss this lush, romantic tale—a rarely performed Puccini gem—at the Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival.

Leaving Winnipeg feeling very proud and inspired by these incredible humans - it was an amazing time bringing this new work to life. A huge thank you to @thisisagoodmess, @tromroan and @georgiaperdikoulias for your creative & genius minds, giving me the absolute honor to tackle Medusa, and for bringing us all together. There aren’t many operas out there that call for a whole team of treble voices (which is all the more reason to continue creating!), so for this one, I’m grateful.

Hey peeps, you’re all singers 🥰❤️

•Monsters Made•
Composer: Roan Shankaruk
Librettist: Georgia Perdikoulias
In Collaboration With: Good Mess Opera Theatre and Muse 9 Productions

Now that cast announcements are coming out, and we’re one month away from the workshop (ah!) I wanted to post about this amazing show.

This is a big one for me. In 2020 I started writing what I thought was a series of monologues. I wanted the women of Greek mythology who are often vilified, omitted, or only offered one line in a story to take center stage. I never imagined that a zoom breakout call during an online summer program would lead to a full-fledged opera.

When Gwen first heard my idea, she told me it sounded more like an opera than a play and I can never thank her enough for that. What followed was an unimaginable journey of meetings with the amazing Gwen and Sawyer of Good Mess Opera Theatre, who paired me with the incredible composer Roan Shankaruk, and then introduced us to Anna and Hyejin from Muse 9 Productions, and we slowly (but also somehow so quickly) had an opera on our hands that was awarded two grants from the Canada Council of the Arts, including a grant to do a workshop this June!

In some ways, this process was so perfect for the kind of show I wanted to create. Monsters Made was always meant to be an ensemble show. No “leads” only a collective of 9 people (muses) coming together to lend their voices in the hopes of amplifying those that were forgotten or misunderstood. The sense of community that has been present since day one of this process has been incredible.

I never imagined that the words I wrote would resonate with so many people and lead to meeting some of the most amazing artists I’ve ever known, and I’m filled with so much gratitude. I cannot wait to see this project and everyone’s hard work come to life. 🏺🐍🏛️🤍

For #worldoperaday I’m thankful to have made and to continue making music with some of the most amazing people.

I’m excited to see what the year has in store for me but for now the coming @operamcgill year includes covering Don Magnifico in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Tom/John in Henry Mollicone’s The Face on the Barroom Floor, and Somnus in Handel’s Semele.

Here’s to many more libiamos, wacky costumes, crazy choruses, convoluted plots, and crazy love interests 🤪

I’m back home and already missing my @thisisagoodmess family after 10 awesome days workshopping and recording an adorably hilarious new adaption with of Hank and Gremlin (Hansel and Gretel) with a brilliant libretto by @soyacraig. What an absolute joy to create, giggle, hangout, and make my pop star recording debut 😉 with some of my favourite people. The biggest thank you to @soyacraig and @gwendopera for creating the most silly and supportive environment for us to play in - ‘twas the good-est messy time!!
