Athens is a city where art, history and mythology are woven into everyday life. From ancient treasures to modern art, these three museums offer different perspectives on the city’s extraordinary cultural heritage.

Definitely my favorite museum in Athens, and truly a little hidden gem. Housed on the site of Fassianos’ former family home in the Aghios Pavlos neighborhood, this intimate museum feels like stepping into the world of one of Greece’s most distinctive modern artists. Inspired by Greek mythology, Byzantine iconography and everyday life, his colourful paintings bring together lovers, cyclists, winged figures and doves, blurring the lines between the human and the divine. A small museum with a distinct soul, and one I could happily return to again and again 💙🕊️

For a broader journey through Greek art, the National Gallery is an essential stop. Its collection spans centuries, tracing the evolution of Greek artistic identity from the post-Byzantine period to modern and contemporary art. Expect historical paintings, portraits, landscapes and works that reflect Greece’s changing relationship with its past, its national identity and the wider European art scene.

If you want to understand the world that shaped so much of Greek culture, this is the place to go 🏺 One of Greece’s most important museums houses an extraordinary collection of ancient Greek art and artifacts, from prehistoric treasures and monumental sculptures to delicate jewelry, pottery and everyday objects. I do have to say it can be quite crowded and overwhelming but it’s worth a visit still.

On a rainy night in #Panepistimiou Street, the city keeps rushing, beneath the lights 💫

We wait for a notification on the screen, searching for a message that was never sent. This is how romances often linger… In a silent state of waiting, amidst the crowd 🥹

Outside the Academy of #Athens, the wet pavement reflects the #bluelight of the night, lending a unique, atmospheric stillness to this piece of nocturnal #streetphotography 📸

Which spot in the city makes you pause for a moment and glance at your phone, hoping for a memory? 👇 A young man checking on his cell phone in Panepistimiou street, outside the Academy of Athens, on a rainy night, shot by Konstantinos Chytis (aka GreekUrbanHiker).

Greece isn’t just about the islands. The Four Seasons Astir Palace in Athens is an iconic resort on the Athenian Riviera about 25 mins from the Acropolis and Athens Airport (without traffic 😉). Luxury all year round.

I wasn’t expecting to find THIS in Athens!

And honestly, they were one of the most unexpected things I came across in Greece!

I’m talking about TORTOISES!

Not in a zoo or enclosure either.

There are actual tortoises wandering around some of Athens’ archaeological sites, casually going about their day alongside ruins that are thousands of years old!

We spotted so many of them, and I couldn’t believe how completely unbothered they were by all the tourists walking past.

Everyone tells you to visit the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the other historic sights in Athens, but nobody mentions the little residents you might come across along the way!

So if you’re planning a trip to Athens, Greece, make sure you keep your eyes peeled while exploring the ancient ruins.
