It’s an odd thing to be a playwright. We create worlds that don’t exist. We know them before anyone else does. We laugh with them, cry with them, argue with them, and every now and then they surprise us. They begin as something only we can see, stitched together with pen, heart, and the stubborn belief that they deserve to exist. Most of the time, they remain words on a page. But if you’re incredibly lucky, someone says yes. A director gathers artists around them. Actors step into your characters’ skin. Designers build a world you thought that you could only imagine. And suddenly those imaginary people breathe. They laugh with voices you’ve never heard before. They cry real tears. They stand in front of you in flesh and blood, and for a little while, the impossible becomes possible. The world you carried alone is suddenly shared by a room full of people. It’s one of the greatest joys I know. Then the lights go dark. The set comes down. Everyone returns to their own lives. Those people who felt so wonderfully real settle back into ink and paper, waiting for the next time someone says yes. The scripts are still there. The stories are still there. But what I miss are the artists who gave this version of that world its heartbeat. Needless to say… I miss my SF Goat Blood family. You are all incredible. #playwriting #goatbloodplay

There are places that exist just a little outside the ordinary. Places where giant trees remind you how small and lucky you are, where queer joy fills the streets, where the sea lions sing all day, and every night somehow finds its own heartbeat full of heart and heat. And on this trip, even mythological creatures became real. San Francisco held us. It lifted us. It gave us a home for a week. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for every person who embraced us, every conversation that turned strangers into instant friends, and every moment that somehow felt both brand new and deeply familiar. We’ve only just left, and already we incredibly miss it. Dare we say it? Favorite city. #sanfrancisco

Sitting in the lobby of a theatre I’ve admired for years, I’m feeling so much gratitude. Grateful that Joe Tally took a chance on my words before they were even finished. Grateful that Theatre Rhinoceros said yes. That they entrusted Alejandro Emmanuel Torres to helm this production and build a world that is equal parts horror, comedy, and something unmistakably, unapologetically Mexican. I’m grateful for this incredible cast, Eric, Casey, Adrian, and Raye, who have taken these characters off the page and made them their own. At some point every playwright has to let go, and that’s the magic. These words don’t belong only to me anymore. They belong to these artists, and I couldn’t be prouder. I’m equally grateful for everyone working behind the scenes. The fight and intimacy choreography bring an honesty and storytelling all their own. The set, the lights, the sound, the stage management, the costumes, the photos, the logo, every collaborator has poured their artistry into this production. Together you’ve transformed words on a page into a living, breathing world full of suspense, laughter, heart, and theatrical magic. As a playwright, there’s no greater gift than watching a room full of artists make your story bigger than you ever imagined. My heart is so very full.

“Goat Blood,” you can surely gather, is quite an ambitious play, trying as it does to be simultaneously comedy, romance, horror, and rich with cultural implication. Does it succeed? Yes, it does. “#goatbloodplay #chupacabra

JT Presents & Theatre Rhinoceros present GOAT BLOOD A west coast premiere by Mark-Eugene Garcia Directed by Alejandro Emmanuel Torres Jun 25 - Jul 19 Theatre Rhinoceros, 4229 18th St, SF In the heart of a dense forest, nestled in the bed of a pickup truck, Pablo and Owen find themselves waiting for their double dates. What starts as a casual debate about tacos, friendships, sexuality, and heritage gradually transforms into something deeper—an undeniable attraction simmering beneath their banter. However, their unexpected connection is soon overshadowed by the arrival of a menacing Chupacabra, threatening to shatter the tranquility of their evening. Owen's terror at the creature's appearance pales in comparison to his shock when he learns that the Chupacabra has been a constant presence in Pablo's life. The chupacabra is closing in on you!!! After successful runs at MEXFEST and FRIGID in New York City, Mark-Eugene Garcia’s Goat Blood makes its West Coast premiere as the final show of Theatre Rhinoceros’s 2025-26 season, co-produced with JT Presents. The play takes the legend of the chupacabra, a figure of fear in many Latine and Southwest American cultures, and mixes it with queer desire and ancient truths we carry inside. Two young men hang out in the flatbed of a pickup truck, waiting for their double dates, when they are pursued by the bloodsucking chupacabra. Before their night of terror ends, they are forced to face the creature of legend and their own buried desires. Alejandro Emmanuel Torres directs a cast of Bay Area actors. The cast features Eric Esquivel-Gutierrez (“Pablo”), Raye Goh (“Creature Creation”), Adrian Nava (“Mr. Sanchez”), and Casey Spiegel (“Owen”). Production team: Adriana Gutierrez (Costume Design), Colin Johnson (Lighting Design), Colin H. Johnson (Video and Projections Design), Kyle McReddie (Fight Choreographer), Wesley Murphy (Sound Design), Noah Rojas-Domke (Scenic), Noah Luce (Intimacy Director), and Raphael Buenaventura (Stage Manager).
