This image lives off one trick: I'm mixing flash with continuous light.

1.) The flash sits in a softbox and is feathered so it only hits the talent – the background stays dark.
2.) A continuous light in gradient mode with the spotlight creates the light beam. Since it's continuous, it's active throughout the entire exposure.
3.) Final ingredient: a bit of camera movement. The continuous light blurs, the model stays frozen sharp by the flash – that's what brings the dynamic to the image.
