🖼️ Gemma Pepper: The Quiet Locus

What happens when photographs are removed from their original contexts?

The Quiet Locus explores displacement through vernacular photographs removed from their original contexts and placed into unstable environments — submerged in water, partially buried beneath stones, overtaken by organic matter, or interrupted by insects.

Through these encounters, images become permeable and contingent. Faces blur, surfaces dissolve, and details are obscured or revealed through shifting material conditions.

Rather than illustrating displacement, the work enacts it, allowing time, environment and chance to act as collaborators.

The work explores how photographs migrate across contexts, accumulate and lose meaning, and resist stable interpretation.

Ode to Po.

A personal project to recognize the amazing talent my dear husband has for cooking.This year he developed his abilities to cook vegetables to increase our immune system and have a healthier lifestyle. These are some of the veggies we use to eat. I am lucky to taste his delicious and healthy creations. We worked this out together. He built the set and I captured the photo. We are a great team.

Tomorrow I’m joining the incredible minds and hearts behind @loamlove to celebrate the launch of their new book, Compassion in Crisis.

🪱I first met Kate when I cold emailed her to ask to collaborate on a story about compost and soil futures for @thisismold’s Food Waste issue. I had picked up a copy of @loamlove at Skylight Books where MOLD was also stocked. At the time, there were very few print magazines dedicated to sustainable practice and ecological futures and I was thrilled to find a kindred spirit. She introduced me to @suepierrethinks (who is now a @fieldmeridians board member), one of my north stars for how to communicate and engage in the science of our living world. 🔮

Fast forward to today and I’m so thrilled to have contributed a small piece for Kate and @kailealoften’s new book on building disaster-resilient communities. (Did I mention Kailea and I are birthday twins?) In this time of precarity we need this wisdom urgently. Join us in a somatic workshop led by @soularbliss and conversation tomorrow! It will be sweet! 🌊

We are so excited that the weather is warming back up and we are getting back to cooking spring flavors. I don’t know about the rest of you, April was a weird one… warm days, freezing nights. Non stop rain and gray sky’s. It feels great to get some green back into our lives!

MOLD Issue 04: Designing for the Senses (@thisismold, 2019) probes the ways that designing for all the senses can lead to embracing the ingredients, flavors, experiences and routines needed to address the coming food crisis.

“From understanding how the science of our multisensory wiring is fundamental to unlocking environmental and gustatory diversity to a blueprint for designing a truly sustainable, hyper-regional food ecology built on flavor, we focus on geography the shifting nature of our relationship with the built and natural environment. We question the philosophical underpinnings surrounding the hierarchy of the senses to the joy of eating with the hand and how the current landscape of human-computer interaction research that will quantify and amplify our capacity to taste.”
