A quick breakdown of animation and compositing for Jewel.

This shot was the first I started with, I ran with it and started animating before I had a clear idea how to put it all together.

The hair animation was really fun and I wanted it to feel organic and creepy/beautiful. But after animating one layer of water in Photoshop I realised that was too time-consuming and did the second layer in After Effects.

This shot informed the process for the rest of the film. As I was doing (most of) the animating on my own as well as the comp, I decided to only animate by hand some details and keep the rest still or very simple.

Versions, versions, versions

This is how Jewel came about. From a couple of visual ideas I wanted to explore, I roughly storyboarded some scenes and quickly moved to colour. Shots developed alongside each other and maybe you can see how some informed others.

This is also how I defined the visual style. It took me a while to figure the logic out. Eventually, the shapes became simpler and the colour palette intensified.

Composition and contrast always, both visually and tonally

The images that inspired Jewel come from some of my favourite artists: Eyvind Earle and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, as well as Frederic Lord Leighton and František Kupka…alongside 00s video games and online beauty standards.

More to come 💎

It’s time!

𝕵𝖊𝖜𝖊𝖑, my (mostly) self-funded independent animated short film is now ready to be released online and I’m excited to share it with you.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be showing behind the scenes of the making of the film.

On September 25th, 𝕵𝖊𝖜𝖊𝖑 will be yours to watch or rewatch forever.

Some snaps of Mama snake sock puppet coming to life in the Basement.

‘I Have A’ by @rory_wt has been storming through festivals, and that makes us so happy! It will next be showing at @daydream.nation.glasgow on 16 August.

A self-funded comedy musical exploring arrested development under late-stage capitalism, consumerism, and death. The film is primarily 2D digital animation, but also incorporates a sock puppet, stock footage, and a closing sequence animated straight ahead on paper with charcoal pencil before being digitally inverted.

highlighting some details and references behind the artwork in Becoming an Artist: Frida Kahlo for #tatekids - can't post the original references here so i've included details below...

1. based on a couple of photos of Frida age 5-6, one featuring the bear, taken by her father Guillermo Kahlo in 1913.

2. i really dug this figurine (left) which looks to be a nahuale (mythical Mexican shapeshifting beast) found in a photo of Frida in Rivera's living room by Bernard Silberstein c. 1940. on the right is a Colima dog ceramic. also part of Frida's Mexican pottery collection. they depict the hairless xolo dogs that she loved and kept as pets.

3. she also amassed a bunch of Judas figures (Mexican papier-mache effigies) which adorn the walls of Casa Azul, many of which were made by artisan Carmen Caballero.

4. Olmec figurine from a photo of Frida taken by Nickolas Muray.
