Recovery is the bit I've planned hardest for. More than the flights. More than my bag.

(plz let me remember the soap this time @munnymunny 😅)

The Tour du Mont Blanc isn't one big day out. It's the same big day out, on repeat, until your legs are cooked. 170-odd km (route dependant, cheers @runboyrun35) 🥲 ~10,000m of vert. 3 countries.

This time the mindset's different. I'm not keen to be crawling to brekky on Day 2.

So the Recovery earned its spot in my @orangemud pack. Shocking really when you're literally looking to cut the tiniest weight bearing object. Here's why I've decided to have it on deck 👇

🌱 Dairy-free. My gut's already juggling altitude, dodgy hut food (plus saucisson) and my life choices. No milkshake on top.

💪 Leucine, the switch that actually flips on muscle repair. The difference between protein doing its job and protein just being a hopeful powder.

🎒 Idiot-proof. Water in, shake, done. Because after 9 hours on my feet I've the coordination of a newborn deer.

It's Raining In My #happyplace 🌧

Despite the rain, and it got worse on the way back, I left home to meet Mark at the Cornish Street entrance for a 9am start. We certainly struck it lucky with the conditions at @thewuu2k this time last week! Today it was wet weather gear and gloves, and the phone only came out once to grab a quick selfie under the shelter of the bush canopy.

Great to share the trails with Mark for a couple of hours and debrief my experiences on the Wuu course. A simple miscalculation on my part resulted in that energy slump during the latter part of the first 35 kilometres. Having trained recently with the Neversecond C30 drink mix and using 1 scoop per bottle on my runs, I started the Wuu with that same concentration in all 4 flasks I was carrying. Combined with utilising the aid stations to refill my empties - mixed to the same C30/1 scoop per 500ml formula - I spent those first several hours taking on board only half of what I should have been. I was burning all that energy but not replacing it with enough carbs to sustain it.

I have spent many years using Tailwind as my sole fuel and this has taken me through thousands of kilometres of training and events. With Neversecond, the principles are the same - just add water, one bottle per hour - but the benefits of being able to add to your carb intake by the amount of scoops to liquid and supplementing with the C30 Gels makes for a more specialised fuelling method. I know the gels work from using them at Faultline, but I made a rookie error for the fluids due to a limited training period leading up to last week.

That's why I couldn't work out why I was so lacking in energy when normally I would be running a lot more than I was. And also why I felt so much better once I took that first gel before I got down to Red Rocks. Combined with my fluids, I was now getting what I should've and after the second gel as I made my way up Tip Track, I was also feeling so much better.

Trial and Error. Lessons learned. Come back stronger 👊😎

We Do Hard Things.

Part 2.

That was my mantra from about halfway into the @thewuu2k 65km. 'We do hard things', I would tell myself. My energy levels were low and I was resigned to walking long stretches of normally runnable trails. Many had passed me along the way, including all my friends and I still had to get down to Red Rocks.

I had been in this space before.
And I had pushed through.
I knew what was to come because I had done it before (several times).
It was going to be hard.
But We Do Hard Things.

I had the first of the 4 @neversecondnz C30 Gels I was carrying in my pack as I made my way down the narrow, winding track to the rocky south coast. This made a huge difference and everything started returning to some form of normality. For the next four hours I was refilling my flasks with Neversecond at the aid stations, grabbing a few sweets and pieces of banana and working my way through the rest of my gels.

Moving as fast as I could. It had taken me just over 6 hours to do the first 35km; the next 30 took a bit over 4 hours. I was nearly there. The smile on my face as I crested the last big climb says it all. There's even an empty gel packet in my hand as I'd just finished my 3rd one.

Entering the Velodrome, you've got no choice but to run. A final loop of the track and it's all over. Glenn, Fabs, Heather and Fibi had all stayed back to cheer me in. Over the next hour and forty five minutes, 18 more finishers would cross the line for a well earned medal.

By that time I was home, fed and resting on the couch.

Once again, the Wuu2k has tested me. As it has since 2019. This year has been another biggie so far - Shotover, Faultline, Ring of Fire and Wuu2k. Time to rest up but still keep on training.

Part 1.

Before I bombard you all with my own race day memories and the official @photos4.sale pics, this is a huge shoutout post to those that captured me doing what I love doing while making memories of their own.

To Richard, Glenn and Heather for the shaky selfies, heavy breathing commentary and the relief of a finish line. To Margo for calling me home, and Fibi for dropping me back to my car. Thank You. It was a long day, and I appreciate you all being there.

From the pre-dawn Skyline trails up on Mt Kaukau to the twisting uphill tracks of Makara Peak and the Velodrome finish on Mt Victoria, these are just some of the incredible places you will venture through on your @thewuu2k journey. A massive thanks to Gareth, Cate and the awesome Wuu Crew and volunteers.

WUU2k, 21k and more elevation than I want to think about, SO grateful to have so much support behind me on this. It was a beautiful day, perfect weather to rip hills and get muddy.

WUU2K: 8.5/10 ⛰️
Absolutely brutal… but somehow still so much fun. This is all I could say afterwards 😅 was absolutely cooked.

33rd out of 165 absolute weapons who completed it 🫡

22km.
960m of elevation.
Cramped literally over the finish line. 😅

But I spent the day smiling, met some awesome people, and was reminded why trail running is such a great community.

Only thing I’d change? A tiny bit of flat ground would’ve been nice. 😂

Training wise - even more leg strength! The downhills were brutal on the quads and actually my arches were burning 🔥 lungs and overall fitness were solid 🤟

Set Goals..Achieve Goals: Course PB Set ✅

Last year I set a goal for this race- to beat my time which I achieved 🥳✅

Chasing times isn’t the only metric of success but rather the success comes from achieving a goal 🫶

Another success was that I had a plenty of fun out there today. To #havefun 🤩 is a key philosophy of my running. When you don’t have fun out on the trails things can turn to 💩 pretty quickly or you come away unsatisfied. Having fun isn’t just about the enjoyable but it’s also finding the fun in the challenge too 💪

Because at the end of the day I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a determined runner who goes out to race hard but I always have a better time when I’m not taking myself so damn seriously 😅🫩👍

Post @thewuu2k soft serve for the win! 🍦🏆

Pacing duties today, and @kereru007 absolutely crushed it. I just held on for dear life while he powered around the trails to finish 6th in the 65km. The guy is an absolute machine.

The best part? Running with Andy, and catching up with all the Wellington trail running crew. It’s been a minute, and it was awesome to see everyone out there.
