INTERVIEW Ritviz on Building Community Through Kurta Saree Dance Party From global hits like Udd Gaye, Liggi and Sage to creating one of the most unique live experiences in electronic music, Ritviz has always blurred the lines between tradition and innovation. With Kurta Saree Dance Party (KSDP), he has taken that vision beyond music, creating an event where fashion, culture, identity and community become part of the performance itself. Ahead of the Australian edition of KSDP, we caught up with Ritviz to talk about the inspiration behind the concept, celebrating South Asian identity, and why belonging has become just as important as the music. What was the moment you realised Kurta Saree Dance Party was more than a show and actually a cultural statement? I don’t think it started with the intention of making a statement. It came from wanting to create a space that felt familiar to me. The first time I saw people turning up in kurtas, sarees, sneakers, or clothes they’d never usually wear to a club, I realised this was becoming something much bigger than a concert. People weren’t dressing up because they had to—they were expressing a part of themselves. That’s when I understood KSDP wasn’t just about my music anymore. It had to become something people wanted to belong to. Interview: Kim Yang – ‘All Good When I’m With You’: A Song of Connection, Healing and Cultural Harmony ‘All Good When I’m With You’ feels like such a warm, healing song — what was the moment or inspiration that first sparked its creation? “All Good When I’m With You” was written on my 8-string ukulele while I was reflecting on my purpose as a songwriter: to bring comfort and joy to the world. I wrote this song two years ago after I had just finished reading Mozart's Sister, a book about Nannerl Mozart and her passion for music in a male-dominated society. I wanted this song to be easy for my audience to sing along with, while also expressing what I hope to offer through my music—joy, comfort, and resilience in the face of challenges. When the audience sings it back to me during live shows, I feel a profound sense of belonging and purpose. It reminds me why I do what I do: to share joy and connection through music. The track blends folk roots with cinematic strings and guzheng, creating a beautiful sense of cultural fusion. How did you approach blending those sounds in a way that felt authentic to you? I’ve always been drawn to classical and instrumental music since I was little. Honestly, instrumental music soothes me more than lyrical music. My neurodivergence (AuDHD) always keeps my brain busy and noisy, so listening to instrumental music stops me from overthinking. My producer, Louis Montgomery, helped me layer different instruments and vocal tracks in a way that creates a soothing sense of fusion that helps listeners feel comfortable enough to settle into the lyrics. Downslide ~ film clip by multi-(un)disciplinary artist and friend Tina Stefanou @_the_longest_hum fresh from her @acca_melbourne solo exhibition. Everything Tina puts her mind to is brilliant and I'm so grateful that she agreed to work on this. X With Tina's long time collaborator @wilnormyle behind the lens, we spent the day at Tina's family farm, a place that I've spent a lot of time, and that became part of our forthcoming album's visual ID in my imagination, and now in a shareable form for you. Downslide's single cover art was also shot there. All of this is on stolen Wurundjeri Land. Land that is part of the Kulin Nation that always was and always will be Indigenous Land. Hope you enjoy this clip. Love Lisa + OD.
