Tom & Jerry is an American animated media franchise and series of comedy short films created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Best known for its 161 theatrical short films by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the series centers on the eternal rivalry between a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry. The plots usually center on Tom's numerous attempts to capture Jerry and the mayhem and destruction that ensues. Despite their endless battle, the duo shares a complex bond, often teaming up against a common enemy or showing genuine concern for one another in times of peril.

The original era of Tom & Jerry is legendary, winning seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film, tying with Disney's Silly Symphonies for the most awards in the category. Over the decades, the franchise has expanded into various spin-offs, including The Tom and Jerry Show (1975), The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980), Tom & Jerry Kids (1990), and the most recent Tom and Jerry in New York (2021). A live-action/CGI hybrid feature film was released on February 26, 2021, bringing the iconic chase to the modern big screen. Whether it's the slapstick violence, the iconic musical scores by Scott Bradley, or the timeless animation, Tom & Jerry remains the gold standard of silent comedy.
