🛶 Das Regie-Duo Nicolas Graux und Truong Minh Quy begleitet Thị Hậu Cao in einem sinnlichen, auf 16mm gedrehten Dokumentarfilm voller warmer Farben, Motive, Klänge und Stimmungen.

Vor mehr als 60 Jahren wurde Thị Hậu Cao von ihrer Mutter in einer fledermausbevölkerten Höhle geboren. Mittlerweile lebt sie in einem Dorf, ist selbst Mutter und Großmutter, manchmal träumt sie von ihrer verstorbenen Mutter – wie sie sie nach Hause ruft, in die Höhle.

Sie gehört zur Ethnie der Rục, deren Sprache und kulturelle Praktiken in Vietnam von der Auslöschung bedroht sind. Sie kümmert sich darum, ihre Sprache an die nächsten Generationen weiterzugeben – mit ihrem Enkelsohn fährt sie den Fluss entlang und übt Vokabeln anhand der Natur.

Behutsam formt das Regie-Duo aus der Gegenwart im heutigen Vietnam und aus den Erinnerungen und Träumen Thị Hậu Caos ein intimes Porträt, das zugleich den in Verruf geratenen ethnografischen Film ein klein wenig neu zu formulieren versucht.

"A Night of Knowing Nothing" is a powerful depiction of reality under oppression blending personal turmoil and political rebellion in a dreamlike requiem for youthful idealism. I've re-watched this Payal Kapadia masterpiece along with 2 short films of her and it's awe-inspiring to look at her works over and over again. ❤️🎬

Meet the Leiden Shorts 2026 International Competition Jury: Nihan Sivridag, Thomas Hakim, and Mees Peijnenburg.

🫀Nihan Sivridag is a cultural worker and film programmer based in Berlin. She has worked in various roles on projects and with institutions in the fields of theatre, film, and visual arts. She has collaborated with cultural institutions such as the Berlin International Film Festival. Since 2021, she has been a member of the Berlinale Shorts selection committee.

🫀Thomas Hakim is a producer at petit chaos, a company he co-founded in 2018. Thomas has produced sixteen shorts, selected in festivals like Berlinale, IFFR, Clermont-Ferrand, IndieLisboa, CPH:DOX. The most recent, Only Angels by Clément Pinteaux, just premièred at Visions du Réel. He has produced three features: A Night of Knowing Nothing (Directors’ Fortnight 2021 - Œil d’Or) and All We Imagine as Light (Cannes 2024 - Grand Prix) by Payal Kapadia and Hair, Paper Water...(Locarno Cineasti del presente 2025 - Golden Leopard) by Trương Minh Quý and Nicolas Graux and coproduced 9 Temples to Heaven by Sompot Chidgasornpongse (Directors’ Fortnight 2026).

🫀Mees Peijnenburg is a Dutch filmmaker whose short films A Hole in my Heart and Even Cowboys Get to Cry were both nominated for the Crystal Bear at Berlinale. His film We Will Never Be Royals won the Golden Calf, and in 2016 he received the Dutch Directors’ Guild Award for A Hole in my Heart. He was selected for the Cinéfondation Résidence of the Cannes Film Festival, where he developed his first feature film, Paradise Drifters, which premiered at Berlinale in 2020. His work is known for experimenting with narrative forms while maintaining a distinct visual style. He has served on juries at festivals including Berlinale and Les Arcs, and has been a speaker at the University of Cambridge. His latest film, A Family, premiered at Berlinale and received a Special Mention.

⭐ Apichatpong Weerasethakul nous fait la grande joie de venir à La Clef, ce mercredi 27 mai à 20h, présenter son film CEMETERY OF SPLENDOUR ! La projection sera suivie d’une discussion.

Des soldats atteints d’une mystérieuse maladie du sommeil sont transférés dans un hôpital provisoire installé dans une école abandonnée. Jenjira se porte volontaire pour s’occuper de Itt, un beau soldat auquel personne ne rend visite.
