THOMAS ABBAN ON THE MAKING OF THE SPIRITUALIZER @thomasabbanofficial

Thomas Abban released his second album, The Spiritualizer, on July 23, 2021. Certain motifs weave through the songs – like angels, religion, mythology, and love- yet each song has a unique sound, and often that sound will take an interesting turn during the song.

Thomas is an interesting artist. He reinvests himself but even in the reinvention, he remains true to himself at the core. He is a writer that writes songs because he needs to – or rather because the album needs to be completed. There’s no real process or at least not ONE process but he gets it done. It seems to work well because he is a careful observer and seems to draw inspiration from the ordinary but has the ability to make it special through his unique take. There’s an interesting spin on an old Irish saying in 100 Balloons, “I hope to get to heaven before you realize I’m gone.” But gone is drifting away like 100 balloons.

He comes to songwriting by considering what will eventually need to be said by him – like reverse engineering a song. So interesting and amazing results. Give the album a listen I promise he offers something for every listener. Hopefully, soon we will see dates of live performances from Thomas-he offers the audience a unique experience often embracing visual components. 5 QUESTIONS WITH THOMAS ABBAN ON NEW EP DEEP WINTER @thomasabbanofficial
Thomas Abban is a musician with a guarded mystique. There’s an ethereal ethos in his performance that gets somehow more ethereal and yet stronger with each new work. We were able to chat with him during the pandemic and we got a few insights but he lets the music speak for itself and for him. We are grateful that he was willing to take on a few questions on his release, Deep Winter.

The first time I saw you perform was December 2017 at the Turf Club and I was enthralled. The last time was just last month (January 2023) at The Entry – again mesmerized. You are a private person but each time I see you I feel like I get to know a new chapter. Do you feel like these chapters are being written in real time or that we’re meeting bits of you that have always been there?

I think they are always there but they come to light in real time. I’m not sure change is as much of a time bound process as many believe. I think my way of expression changes in sync with what I’m trying to express at any given point.
