Before there was a movement, there was a festival.

In 2017, the first full International Human Rights Art Festival transformed Dixon Place on New York City’s Lower East Side into a hub for creativity, activism, and dialogue.

With 50 events and more than 150 artists and performers, the festival brought together extraordinary voices from across the worlds of art and human rights. The weekend featured welcome messages from Norman Lear and Senator Charles E. Schumer, along with appearances by NYC Human Rights Commissioner Carmelyn Malalis, Chinese democracy activist Wei Jingsheng, Nigerian activist and founder of Sahara Reporters Omoyele Sowore, and many others.

What began as one ambitious weekend became the foundation for the work IHRAM continues today.

💙 If you believe that art can inspire action, foster empathy, and strengthen human rights, please support our mission. Every donation, share, and act of participation helps us continue creating platforms for artists and advocates around the world.

AMERICA’S SLIDE TOWARDS AUTHORITARIANISM is a NEXT GENERATION INDIE BOOK AWARD finalist! 💛🎤✨

Congrats to the other finalists @kashawn.writes, @Corinnabarrettlain, @kitty_stryker, and Jennifer Boulanger.

This anthology presents 30 writers and 12 visual artists, culled from more than 350 submissions, all offering their take on the fragility of the values that once made America great: freedom of expression, democracy for everyone, religious and ethnic pluralism, and the belief that all people are created equal.

To the at the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, thank you for this honor and giving “America’s Slide Towards Authoritarianism" a spotlight. 📚✨
