The last year was a really difficult one for me personally. I spent many days questioning if I was a good enough teacher and if my best was enough for the students in front of me every day. As someone who doesn’t share much of my private life online, I struggled with my mental health and severe depression and anxiety for most of my adult life and the more I reached for the goals I set my sights on, I also had the voice of imposter syndrome constantly telling me that things wouldn’t work out for me because I just didn’t work hard enough and I shouldn’t be in the activity anymore. By this point last year, I was not planning on teaching another season of drum corps. Fortunately, I have some persistent friends like @bugleboysem and @s.r.griffin that wouldn’t let that happen.

This summer was not at all what I expected and easily my favorite season I’ve taught because I learned so much from the incredible teachers and mentors around me but more than anything I gained a new family and some of the best friends and support systems I could never have imagined a year ago. I never once felt like I had something to prove and I was always welcomed as I am without having to be anything other than myself. Learning to trust myself and my abilities is still a daily battle but I feel more confident because I always had the support of this team, no questions asked.

@trevor_stojanovich and @zemogeon , Thank you for putting together a team of powerhouse educators and the most diverse and inclusive staff in DCI, 9 women, a majority BIPOC, 21 rings, and some of the most genuine and kind human beings in the activity! My cup is filled with gratitude and appreciation for the art we created together this summer.
