Education is way more than just sitting in a classroom. For Cathia Thomas, it’s also about giving kids the space to move, play, build confidence and discover what they’re capable of.

Cathia is the founder of @thomaslearningpl , a children’s and youth physical literacy center in Philadelphia. Through after-school and summer programs for kids in kindergarten through 8th grade, Thomas Center helps children build healthy habits and a positive relationship with physical activity, while making friends and having fun along the way.

But building a place where kids feel supported has also taught Cathia something about supporting herself.

One of the hardest parts of entrepreneurship for her has been the loneliness that can come with building something on your own. When you’re the person responsible for the decisions, the pressure and keeping everything moving, it can be easy to spend so much time showing up for everyone else that you forget to do the same for yourself.

Cathia has learned to make room for both.

“I’ve learned to manage the pressure of doing it all while showing up for myself as much as I show up for others.”

And there’s something really meaningful about that lesson coming from someone whose business is built around helping kids grow stronger, healthier and more confident in themselves.

Here’s to Cathia, to the community she’s creating for Philadelphia kids, and to every business owner learning that taking care of the person behind the business matters, too.

NEW YORK CITY !!

Concluding our summer with an unforgettable trip to Times Square and the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) was a true highlight! The interactive exhibits at MoMath captivated the students, allowing them to engage with math concepts in a hands-on and exciting way. It was incredible to see their curiosity come alive as they explored the museum. Bringing the students out of state for such an enriching experience was immensely rewarding, especially for those who had never had the opportunity to visit before. Watching them discover new places and ideas was a reminder of the impact these experiences can have on their learning and personal growth.

Outdoor play !!!

A few weeks ago, my job decided to create a technology-free outdoor activity session for the students, encouraging them to disconnect from their electronics and engage in hands-on learning experiences. We began by introducing them to classic playground games such as Four Square and jumping rope, which not only provided physical exercise but also taught them coordination and the value of friendly competition.

As the session progressed, I organized an obstacle course that required the students to work together, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and effective communication. This activity was designed to challenge their problem-solving skills and foster a sense of collaboration, as they had to strategize and support one another to overcome various obstacles. The experience was incredibly rewarding, as I observed the students not only enjoying themselves but also developing essential life skills that go beyond the classroom.

while working at a learning center, my boss introduced me to the breakthrough program, which needed a video of me teaching a lesson. with me are 3 students in different grades learning and understanding independent and dependent variables. Though this is trimmed, i wanted to show this lesson and their responses !!
