As gongshi, the practice of appreciating rocks, originated in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) and, like many cultural developments, later spread to Korea (suseok) and Japan (suiseki). It was shaped not only by the region’s geology but also by philosophical traditions such as Daoism and Confucianism, both of which place great value on contemplation and close observation of the natural world in order to gain knowledge or enlightenment for spiritual growth.
Today, however, not all of these stone concepts have much to do with nature, let alone contemplation. Some even represent the exact opposite of an ode to Mother Nature. But in the Anthropocene, is anything left untouched by humans? Like stones collected on a beach, we’ve gathered a selection of projects that could be read as expressions of a longing for a life more closely connected to nature—or simply as yet another attempt to create “something new” within capitalism. Decide for yourself.

Another Look Book look back, this time at the Leibal-curated section.

Known for its sharp editorial eye and commitment to minimalist design, Leibal brought that same perspective to the show floor with a tightly considered selection of independent American designers. Curated by Leo Lei and Julia Haney Montanez, the space offered a snapshot of distinct practices connected by material clarity, thoughtful making, and a refined approach to form.

#TheRolodex — before I was a design professional™️ I remember buying my first home + feeling totally overwhelmed by how to approach the design journey. I would have *died* to work with an interior designer or architect but put every dollar I had into my down payment! I stalked some of my fave designers to see what I could learn from them but I didn’t find much... now as a designer, I know why us designers get some damn protective over great vendors (hint: they are hard to find!) but this series is for everyone out there who is just trying to MAKE IT HAPPEN I FEEL YOU. 🫡

Thomas Yang is a Taiwanese and Northern-Italian designer, with a background in industrial and object design. His craft is derived from culture, memory, and inherited techniques; it is based in a philosophy of care enacted to extend the life of the objects he makes and offers respect to their living environments.

Thomas' work will be featured in Objects of Peace, co-curated by Pat Kim, opening July 22 at the Assembly Line Storefront in Brooklyn.

ON HIS SOURCES OF INSPIRATION... I am inspired by objects of daily use, by moments of our lives that are “ordinary”- as simple as switching on a light switch, or turning on the faucet to brush our teeth in the morning. The studio investigates the phenomena that transforms objects into beautifully ordinary artifacts. I ask, how can and does life inform design? Objects may not be made to become artifacts, but when created with material intention and honest craft to last past seasons and decades, they will naturally become beautifully ordinary — artifacts of the home.

ON HIS PROCESS... I studied industrial design and didn't align with its mentality of material consideration as a means to an end. I try to slow down the process of design through material intention, investigating what it would look like to domesticate the industrial design process. In doing so, I look to a combination of memory and material. Some come as images of objects, mechanisms, or details I have seen in the past — like the dark wooden chairs in my Nonna's home in Northern Italy, or the elevator buttons of the Taiwanese apartment building my dad grew up in.

ON HIS PROUDEST MOMENT... I find my proudest moments are when I fail at something and I learn from the mistakes I made. Being able to see where I went wrong and knowing how I can make the adjustment to my craft to then execute the next piece is an assuring feeling.

this is what we created @oneofone.works for ✨

the light coming through the windows. the making sessions that remind you what your hands are capable of and what makes a space like this possible. the conversations that wandered and stayed. the children who walked in wide-eyed and touched everything - the way art is supposed to be touched.

Our openings - let it be public or private, NYC Design Week, collaborations - brought the most unexpected, curious, generous people through our door. thank you for coming. for staying. for asking questions and leaving a little of yourselves behind.

it reminds us exactly why we started.

and this is just the beginning.
monthly programming is coming ;)

What a treat to spend an evening celebrating the inaugural class of @elledecor Rising Stars @cove.ny. A great big congratulations to all 35 honorees - and really, it’s quite a list. Wildly diverse and well worth a deep dive.

Three from our nominations were there to celebrate (@thomasyangstudio @present__practice @chromasf) but it was so special to see and meet many of the other Rising Stars and to feel the promise of emerging practices that are already making waves and meaningful change in the design world. A huge thank you to @elk_elisa @fourhandsfurniture and @cristobalita for bringing us together for this special purpose and the loveliest evening. Here’s to more of this!
