The first season of The Fox Hollow Murders did nearly everything you can hope a true crime documentary will do. Millions of viewers, Emmy nomination, a big public reaction. More importantly, it forced the police department's injustice and bigotry into the open. It centered the victims. And it pushed the FBI and Indiana State Police to reopen a case that was never properly investigated.

From the outset, we knew a follow-up had to step outside the central story and take a long look at the funhouse mirror the first season had created — the effects, the reactions, the apparatus around the case. So this episode carries a second perspective. We see our characters the way any documentary sees them, but we also see them clearly inside the machinery of a true crime show. We open at a true crime festival, where fans line up to shake their hands. Mid-interview, we cut wide to reveal a subject sitting at the center of a lighting rig. At an emotional breaking point, a victim's daughter steps outside to smoke, and she's standing beside a camera and stacked Pelican cases. Our characters watch social media react to their appearance on the show — while they're on the show.

This isn't a play for some "meta" trend. Paradoxically, acknowledging that everyone now knows they're on television is the most honest way to tell this story. It's also a statement about what a documentary can do: wrest a narrative away from a police department, reinterpret the facts, and ask what we owe the dead when institutions failed the living.
