I went to opening day of this new bookshop and cafe in Hyde Park. First Light Books at 43rd & Speedway. Excellent book selection and atmosphere. Great for the neighborhood and the city to have independent bookstores thrive again. Stop by, grab some coffee, and support this small gem of a place.

Kudos to the design team, @thoughtbarn and @annedgerton, on the beautiful details. The space is within the former Hyde Park post office, which closed in the summer of 2021.

@firstlightbooks is officially open!! Occasionally in this life, we get to do some truly extravagant things. Not always, just sometimes. It’s better that way because you savor it more. This last week, my baseball team, @texasplayboysbaseball club had our annual traveling barnstorm game in Paris…France. To travel to France to play a non-professional, “friendly” sandlot game is about as extravagant as it gets in my book. To do it with these guys was the icing on top.

Thank you @theneonjungle and @gailchovanatelier for hosting us in your lovely home in the countryside. Thank you @vince.d.777 for you coordination efforts on the Parisian side, and thank you to the @imperials_baseball club for the slippery game in Mouy. Thank you @baseblogfr for putting the APB out for us that led us to all of this, and thanks to my brother @dylan_mader for putting us in touch. This was truly the trip of a lifetime and an effort of many true baseball enthusiasts.

2014 was a year of firsts. I finally began finding my feet in the studio at @justinesbrasserie, although I still wasn't entirely happy with my lighting and made frequent changes to the setup. I would often shoot outdoors to compensate, natural light really is the best way to shoot tintypes in my opinion, but not always practical.

I'm not sure I took a single day off in 2014, I was hungry and would shoot anyone and travel anywhere. In the fall, I traveled outside of Austin for the first time, shooting pop-ups in towns all the way to Denver and back. That trip really tested my ability to shoot in new locations, using all kinds of weird locations to set up makeshift darkrooms and studios.

One of my favorite shoots was for @bellandbird, shooting antique Jewelry in a historic home in downtown Austin. I also shot every bike in the @handbuiltshow that year - over 90 plates in the course of a single day 🥵

This was the year that folks really started to turn out to the studio - many of whom I'm proud to say have become regulars, visiting me every year or two since then for an updated portrait or to shoot a new addition to the family.

After I've posted my favorites from each year, I'll be making a limited run of prints... Let me which ones you'd like to see printed in the comments!
