Photos from the recent “Who Owns The City?” exhibition @threefivefivethree curated by Dr Jacqui Alexander with @monasharchitecture masters students. Australia’s housing system has become a key driver of inequality. Through counter mapping practices and data sleuthing, students constructed a forensic picture of landownership in inner Melbourne where escalating real estate values and the demolition of public housing stock continues to displace marginalised communities. Through a series of risograph printed maps, pamphlets and flyers, the project investigates parcels of land partially insulated from the speculative market and asks if these sites could be leveraged for subsidised and non market housing opportunities. The emphasis on printed matter in this show reframes architecture in line with its civic obligations through public engagement and dissemination practices. The project is adjacent to a funded research project by Jacqui Alexander and housing economist Cameron Murray. It was made possible by the generous support of @monasharchitecture @threefivefivethree and the enthusiasm and hard work of the students. Thank you to all who came to see and celebrate it. MAKING SPACE: Public Forum and Panel Wednesday 3 June 600pm -730pm Making Space is a project by OFFICE, investigating the evolving needs and challenges for creatives across the City of Yarra. The project is grounded in listening to the creative sector through a series of interviews with creative practitioners and a public forum. The public forum is a chance to hear from the wider creative community about why they make work in the City of Yarra and the barriers to continuing to create in the area. There will be a short panel discussion to start the event then a facilitated discussion to hear from the broader creative sector. The outcomes of this work will be a series of publicly available recommendations on how the creative sector could be better supported to make and show work in the City of Yarra. Arie Rain Glorie - is an independent creative producer, curator, and multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne. Tracy Burgess - is the Executive Director at Gertude Contemporary. Tracy is a passionate advocate for the visual arts in particular, in environments that support both the production and presentation of art. Abigail Gilmore - is Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Her research is on culture, public policy and place with recent projects on everyday participation, local governance and the move beyond the ‘creative city’ in place-based policymaking. Lucie Loy - is the Director of Seventh Gallery and also an artist, curator and writer with a deep commitment to the independent arts community.

Who Owns the City? is a project by Dr Jacqui Alexander @brandyjalexander and students from Monash University Architecture. It begins from a stark reality: Australia’s housing system has become a key driver of inequality. Soaring land values, the demolition of public housing, and the concentration of property in fewer hands are reshaping the social and spatial dynamics of cities. Against this backdrop, the project investigates a simple but urgent question: who owns the city? Through countermapping practices and data sleuthing, students work with official records and available data to construct a forensic picture of land ownership across inner Melbourne — where high amenity and escalating real estate values continue to displace marginalised communities. Through GIS mapping, it investigates landholdings that are partially insulated from speculative logics, and asks whether these sites could support new forms of subsidised and non-market housing. Exhibition: Friday June 5 - Saturday June 6 Opening: 6pm Friday June 5 Supported by @monasharchitecture @threefivefivethree Pictured publication by @des.21 and Tom Chiew Identity by @des.21

Collective Curriculum is an evolving, open-source archive of pedagogical exercises that respond to the climate crisis through creative practice. These exercises are presented as graphic posters that communicate actionable and participatory ways to engage with ecological thinking and care. Currently in its second iteration, the project features contributions from designers, artists and teachers from Australia and around the world. Part of Melbourne Design Week 2026 curated by Bridget Keane @materialfields and @oliviavanessahamilton Olivia Hamilton. Opening Thursday 21st of May (tonight) 6-8pm @threefivefivethree 3553 Emma St Collingwood Exhibition Open hours Friday 22nd 11-3pm Saturday 23rd 11-3pm Workshop: Saturday 23rd May 10.30-12.30pm Mapping Home: Ecologies of Care by @sandra_githinji (sign up - free but link in the bio) This is a participatory workshop that explores “home” across personal and planetary perspectives, tracing how ecological thinking and care are experienced through bodies, dwellings, communities, and land. Informed by ideas developed through Sandra Githinji’s PhD research, Constellations of Home: A Relational Practice, and expanding on her contribution to Collective Curriculum 1 in 2025, participants will collectively map what sustains and depletes different layers of home, from domestic and communal life to environmental and social systems. Through drawing, annotation, and discussion, the session invites attendees to explore how care and ecological responsibility move across interconnected layers of home, revealing how broader systems are felt intimately, and how small acts can ripple outward collectively. No prior experience required. All materials provided. @collective_curriculum @ngvmelbourne @creative_vic @interiordesign.rmit #NGV #MelbourneDesignWeek #CreativeVic #CreativeState
