A carosel of slides with the following text by slide: 1. pile of poems to manuscript Instructor: Zoe Tuck Location: Zoom Wednesdays 6-8pm July 1, 8, 15, 22 2. “You cannot write a single line w/out a cosmology a cosmogony laid out, before all eyes” —Diane di Prima, “Rant” In which we will explore the concept of ORDER as it pertains to the arranging and selecting of poems for a manuscript, with a special emphasis on how other art forms approach form, such as... 3. “If I were asked to name the chief benefit of the house, I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace. ” —Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space, translated by Maria Jolas ...architecture, which invites us to ask: what is the organizing logic of a house? What might poetry learn from this blueprint? 4. “An album is more than a container for songs...It shapes how meaning travels: the order of tracks, the space between them, the cover image, credits, and the listening environment all guide interpretation.” —Richard Varey ...music, through which we’ll consider what album and playlist sequencing have to teach writers about organizing our work. 5. ...and other forms, such as film, dance, with attention to aleatory (chance-based) and magical compositional strategies. And of course, we will attend to the poetry book qua poetry book! Each slide bears the Threshold Academy logo (with the name handwritten, the first word above the last with a horizontal line between them). The first slide has a drawing of an alembic. The backgrounds of the next few slides have images in the background that allude to their content. Respectively, a map of the cosmos, a house, a vinyl LP, and then an alembic again. The last slide has a photo of Zoe Tuck, taken by Miriam Saperstein.

I’m pleased to be offering some new classes in August through Threshold Academy (which I wish I could stop myself from referring to as “my little school”). There are generative writing classes on zoom and—gasp—in person! I am doing an actual workshop (but reflective and collaborative) and by popular demand I am reprising my class on Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. I’m introducing a less intensive ongoing reading group (the book for August is Dreaming in the Fault Zone by Eleni Stecopoulos). August also sees the introduction of a new instructor, Miriam Saperstein, who will be teaching Playing with Text and Image and collaborating with me on a class on Lewis Hyde’s The Gift.
