The kitchen isn’t just a workspace. It’s the soul of the home.

For interior designer and artist Natalie Hauman of @nataliehauman____atelier good kitchen design is about more than cabinetry, appliances and getting the layout right.

For the kitchen @thuula__ Guest Haven in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Natalie approached the space through the same lens she brings to her paintings: through layers of light, texture, balance and emotion.

“𝘐𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳, 𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵.”

Swipe through as Natalie shares her approach to creating a kitchen that feels considered rather than simply styled.

1. Balance is the quiet force behind every space that feels grounded. In kitchens, that means tuning into proportion, layout, and symmetry, not as rules, but as rhythms.

Think: open shelves that don’t overwhelm, counters that feel spacious but not sparse, and forms that hold visual weight with grace. Balance is how a kitchen breathes.

2. A kitchen infused with texture feels warm, inviting, and deeply human.

I love mixing wood with matte ceramics, soft linen with cool marble, handwoven baskets beside polished Brass. It’s in this layering that a kitchen tells its story.

3. Light is where magic happens. Natural light is ideal, it’s useful to think in layers.

Handmade pendant lights, dimmers for soft mornings or evenings, and the glow of a single bulb over the chopping board, lighting isn’t just design. It’s emotion.

4. Good design should feel effortless. Every drawer that glides smoothly, every cupboard you can reach without strain — this is design that cares for you.

Designing for real life — not just magazine spreads — is where beauty and usefulness hold hands.

Some places invite you to slow down.

Tucked away in nature, Thuula Haven is all about quiet mornings, beautiful views and the kind of stillness you don’t realise you need until you’re here.

A little escape from everything. 🌿

Just behind our beautiful Airbnb are massive fields of canola flowers stretching as far as the eye can see. Because apparently, waking up somewhere this beautiful wasn’t quite enough,we also needed our own private sea of yellow flowers right outside the door.
Totally normal. Totally casual. 🌼💛

Not sure how long I’m going to be able to live without this.
Wood burning hot tubs are officially part of my new personality.

Nothing gives me more joy than stumbling upon the most beautiful, remote Airbnbs around the world, experiencing them for myself, and then sharing them with you. ✨

And this place absolutely takes the cake!

Tucked away inside a private, gated vineyard, just 25 minutes from the town of Hermanus in South Africa, is the most enchanting little escape. Surrounded by nature, tranquility, and endless beauty, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, switch off, and simply enjoy where you are.

We stayed in six different Airbnbs on this trip, and I think this one was my favorite. 🤍

A true hidden gem — and exactly the kind of place I’m always searching for.

More pictures to come of this fabulous place

MIDWEEK ESCAPE

A few weeks ago we took a quick break to the evergreen Thuula Hidden Haven for my birthday and it was just what the doctor ordered.

It was a perfectly sunny winter’s day and we made pizzas, had wine and relaxed in the woodfired pool with a glass of grenache. Idyllic.

It wasn’t all pizza, but that’s all I recorded; put the phone down and enjoyed the moments we shared.

Thank you to everyone who made my birthday special.
